１９５５年３月生於奧克拉荷馬州的歌手蕾芭．麥肯泰（Reba McEntire）是美國鄉村樂壇巨星，為１９８０年代中期至１９９０年代中期鄉村首席天后．

蕾芭自小喜歡音樂．高中時，麥肯泰兄弟姊妹就常常表演。他們一起組成了一個三人組The Singing McEntires。

1971年，三人發行一首關於他們著名祖父的單曲，名為［The Ballad of John McEntire］。由當地唱片公司壓制為單曲，並在地區內少量發行。

只是蕾芭的哥哥高中畢業後，樂團就分道揚鑣了．

但蕾芭一面就讀大學，一面繼續表演．

１９７４年，麥肯泰的一場表演結束後，鄉村藝人Red Steagall對蕾芭表演印象深刻。

母親為女兒詢問Steagall是否能夠幫助她所有孩子獲得一份唱片合約。

１９７５年初，Steagall麥肯泰母親，告知：“我不能接受三個人。但我可以接受蕾芭。她有一些不同的東西。”

PolyGram/Mercury唱片公司的Glenn Keener聽了麥肯泰的磁帶，

１９７５年１１月，與蕾芭簽訂鄉村音樂合約。

１９７６年１月錄製首支單曲［I Don’t Want to Be a One Night Stand／我不想成為一夜情人］

由Layng Martine Jr.創作， Glenn Keener 製作成一首鄉村抒情曲，旋律悅耳

並以包含弦樂的鄉村都會（ Countrypolitan）風格精緻編曲。

在優美的弦樂聲與鋼琴聲中，蕾芭以當時相當純淨的嗓音娓娓演繹這首哀怨的歌曲．

１９７６年４月發行後，商業表現並不理想．

［I Don’t Want to Be a One Night Stand］只登上Billboard鄉村歌曲榜＃８８．

由於蕾芭在６月結婚，加上尚就讀大學（１９７６年１２月畢業），

直到１９７７年才推出下一首單曲．

１９７７年８月發行首張同名大碟［Reba McEntire ］

由 Jerry Kennedy, Glenn Keener製作, 走傳統鄉村樂路線

樂評良好

可是並未打入鄉村專輯榜或流行榜．

這些單曲和專輯都沒有為麥肯泰帶來版稅收入——她的預付款和唱片公司的製作費用都高於銷售收入。

１９８８年，在麥肯泰離開 Mercury 多年後，她終於從這張專輯中獲得第一筆版稅。
