１９９３ 年，加拿大歌手艾拉妮絲．莫莉塞特（Alanis Morissette）在高中畢業後，從渥太華搬到多倫多。

歌詞是對過去情人憤恨復仇的念頭，充滿侵略性，莫莉塞特的詮釋激動有力．

很多人認為這是歌手對分手戀情的怨念．

莫莉塞特從未公開指認任何人就是歌曲中描繪的前男友。她在 2008年：

‘嗯，我從來沒有談論過我的歌曲是關於誰的，我也不會，因為當我寫它們時，它們是為了個人表達而寫。因此，儘管對那些可能在我的歌曲看到自己的人表示應有的尊重，而且這種情況一直在發生，但我從未真正對此發表評論，因為我為自己而不是其他人寫了這些歌曲。’

［You Oughta Know］推出後大受好評，

《AllMusic》的 Stephen Thomas Erlewine 讚揚了這首歌的“復仇”歌詞，並表示這首歌推動了專輯的成功，並鼓勵公眾擁抱“搖滾中的女性”運動。
