Unit 2 “Big City Life”

1.          swamp: an area of very wet land, often overgrown with grass or trees

2.          rock bed: the layer of rock below the earth’s surface (compare seabed=the bottom o the sea)

3.          skyscraper: a very tall building (scrape: rub)        

4.          subway/underground or tube/metro       

l          Subway (railroad that goes under the ground) is used in American English

l          Underground or tube are used more frequent in British English.

l          Metro is used in most of Europe.    

5.          sink: go down 

6.          weight: how heavy something is      

7.          record: write down something that has happened         

8.          officials: people with important positions in an organization

9.          construction: building of things such as houses, roads, factories

10.      percentage: a fraction of an amount expressed as a particular number of hundredths of that amount.

11.      cosmopolitan: a place or society full of people from different places

12.      pollution: poisonous or dirty substances

13.      attraction: something or someplace that people can go for interest

14.      tourist: traveler

15.      traffic: cars, lorries (vehicle used to transport goods), and buses

16.      mask: something that covers your face
