Unit 1 “Culture Shock” of Essential Reading 2

1.          culture

l   A culture is a particular society or civilization, especially considered in relation to its beliefs, way of life, or art.

²  ...people from different cultures...   

2.          difference

l   The difference between things is the way or ways in which they are not the same.

²  Is there much difference between British and European law?

3.          exciting             

l   If something is exciting, it makes you feel very happy or enthusiastic.

²  The race itself is very exciting.

4.          tip     

l   If you tip someone such as a waiter in a restaurant, you give them some money in order to thank them for their services.

²  Do you really think it's customary to tip the waiters?.        

l   A tip is a useful piece of advice.

²  ...tips for busy managers...         

5.          accent      

l   Someone who speaks with a particular accent pronounces the words of a language in a distinctive way that shows which country, region, or social class they come from.

l   He had developed a slight American accent.

6.          settle in                 

l  If you settle in, you become used to living in a new place, doing a new job, or going to a new school.

l   I enjoyed King Edward's School enormously once I'd settled in.

7.          sacred   

l  Something that is sacred is believed to be holy and to have a special connection with God.

l   The owl is sacred for many Californian Indian people.

8.          jaywalking      

l  Jaywalking is the act of walking across a street in a careless and dangerous way, or not at the proper place.

9.          illegal        

l  If something is illegal, the law says that it is not allowed.

l   It is illegal to intercept radio messages.

10.      sum up

l   summarize

11.      hang out

l   spend a lot of time with a friend

12.      uncomfortable         

l  If you are uncomfortable, you are not physically content and relaxed, and feel slight pain or discomfort.

²  I sometimes feel uncomfortable after eating in the evening.
