倒裝句都是非常正式的句子，多用於詩歌、小說或論文

。否定副詞放句首，有強調的意味。常見的否定用語有：

絕不：never、by no means、under no circumstances、on no account、in no way、at no time
幾乎不：seldom、little、rarely、hardly、scarcely
Scarcely had I left home when/before it started to rain. 我剛出門就下雨。
（＝It started to rain just after I left home.)
直到…才…：not until
再也不：no longer
一…就…：no sooner …than…
No sooner had I put the phone down than it rang again. 我一放下電話，電話又再度響起。(no sooner 後用過去完成式且倒裝，而than後用一般過去式)
不只…而且…：not only + 倒裝句 , but also + 一般句

* only 所強調的方式狀態語、條件狀態語、地點狀態語、時間狀態語等位於句首時，會有部分倒裝。如果only修飾的不是狀態語而是主語，則不能倒裝。

例句：

By no means will I give up my dream. 我絕不會放棄夢想。

Not until then did my parents allow me to drive the car. 在那之前，我父母不准許我開車(=My parents did not allow me to drive the care until then.)

No longer does he need my help. 他再也不需要我的幫忙。

Not only did he make a promise, but he also kept it. 他不止作出承諾，也遵守了。(=He not only made a promise but he also kept it.)

Only by taking a taxi can you arrive there on time. 你只有搭計程車，才可能準時抵達。

Only his mother was invited. 只有他媽媽受到邀請。

。neither、nor(也不/也沒有, 現在少用，太正式)、so(也這樣) 之後，但當 so 的意思是表示「的確如此」，則絕對不能倒裝。

肯定：so + be/ have/ 助動詞/ 情態動詞 + 主語
否定：nor/ neither + be/ have/ 助動詞/ 情態動詞 + 主語

The mayor of Toronto refused to resign, nor do we expect him to. 

He has visited the museum. So have I.

She can swim. So can I.

The boy can’t skate(溜冰). Nor can his brother. (Neither can his brother.)

John won first prize in the contest. －So he did. 約翰在比賽中贏得一等獎。－的確如此。

。條件句 (should、had)

以 “should” 或 “had” 開頭的條件句，是較為正式的用法，用於較正式的文章中

Should you need any help, don’t hesitate to call. 如果你需要任何幫助，別遲疑打來吧！(should 在這裡其實就是 if 的意思，語氣上更正式)

Had I known you were coming, I would have changed. 如果我知道你會來，我就會換套衣服了。

。方向副詞在句首

為了更加生動的描繪、敘述情況，會將表示運動方向的副詞（如 here, there, out, in, up, off, down, away, back⋯等）放在句首。注意：這種句子必須是 go, come, run, rush 等表示位移的動詞，而主語則是名詞。

Here comes the bus. 公車來了。

There goes the bell. 鈴聲響了。

Down came the rain. 雨落了下來。

Out rushed a tiger from the wood. 從林子裡衝出一隻老虎。
