１９８７年　美國創作歌手芳達夏普（Vonda Shepard）與加拿大歌手丹希爾合唱［Can’t We Try］, 登上加拿大單曲榜亞軍. 美國單曲榜＃６　受到歌壇矚目
也跟Reprise唱片簽下合約

１９８９年８月初, ２６歲的芳達發行首張同名大碟［Vonda Shepard］

製作群包括芳達, Gardner Cole , James Newton Howard ,Robert Kraft ,Art Munson

夏普擔任大部份詞曲創作, 獲得好評。

首支宣傳主打［Baby, Dont You Break My Heart Slow］未引起迴響。

１９８９年末, 芳達推出第二單曲［Dont Cry Ilene／別哭,艾琳］

由她個人譜寫, 夏普與Robert Kraft製作成一首融合爵士-R&B的流行抒情曲,

夏普擔任鋼琴演奏, 在中板的節奏間, 從一名白人女子觀點, 看待她黑人好友與白人男性戀情破裂──雖然白人女子暗戀白人男性, 但為了尊重好友, 與他保持距離

［Dont Cry Ilene］沒打入Billboard單曲榜

但在副榜－成人抒情榜成績不錯, 登上＃１７

只是芳達在主流市場仍沒打響名氣, 大碟銷售低迷

直到１９９８年才以電視原聲帶專輯［Songs from Ally McBeal］（艾莉的異想世界）成名
