The Beitou Creek has its source in the Hell Valley of Beitou. It is a creek with steamy hot water. During the Japanese occupation, this creek flowed through Beitou Park, and due to the large drop differences on the riverbed, many small creekfalls were formed. The Japanese call them “taki”.

“Taki’ is a Japanese word meaning “hot waterfall”.There were five “Taki” in Beitou Creek. But now only Taki One still remains and it is the largest and most famous one.

Toward the end of Japanese Occupation, some simple huts were set up here, and one of these naturally formed hot spring baths turned into a public bathing house named Takino-yu. It has existed for over 70 years, and it is still an inexpensive public bathhouse in business today.

During the Japanese ruling period, taking a bath in Takino-yu only cost 3 cents. Therefore, it was generally referred as 3-cent bathhouseamong the general public.

Takino-yu Bath House is Taiwan’s oldest hot spring bath still in existence. The bath pool was constructed with stone locally found in Qilian, which is a type of sedimentary rock and adds a touch of antique look to its style.

The hot spring water in Takino-yu is from the sulfur spring in the Hell Valley, which contains a small amount of radium and is known to be healing to certain illness.

There is a monument commemorating the visit of Japanese royal prince to The Beitou public bath house. In 1923, Japanese Royal Prince Hirohito, who later became the Japanese emperor, visited Taiwan. During his visit, Prince Hirohito visited the public bath house in Beitou Park and saw the sample of hokutolite. He even went to the quarry where hokutolite was gatheredthe riverbed of the Beitou Creek.

After the visit, a monument was erected, and it was engraved:To Commemorate the Royal visit by His Highness, the Imperial Prince. The monument is 148 cm in height, 24 cm in width and depth. The monument is now in the front yard of Takino-yu bath house. It has been well preserved and is definitely worth a visit!!
