向陽學苑的前身為「台北陸軍衛戍療養院北投分院」 The predecessor of Shan-Yang Lyceum(向陽學苑), was Beitou Branch of Taipei Army Garrison Sanatorium(台北陸軍衛戍療養院北投分院). And it is the Beitou Army Hospital(國軍北投醫院). In year 1898, during the Japan-governed period, considering the troops to be garrisoned in Taipei for a long time, and the good quality of Beitou’s hot spring , Military defense minister Fujita 嗣章(藤田嗣章) erected the sanatorium herewith for recovery of wounded soldiers. In year 1905, the outbreak of Russo-Japanese War coincidently happened. A lot of wounded soldiers from Liaodong Peninsula遼東半島 were sent here for convalesce(療養). In this regards, the growing reputation of Beitou’s hot spring was spread far and wide. Or we could say, Beitou was renowned for its hot springs afterwards. The original sanatorium area covered the present Army Hospital of Beitou, Beitou 逸仙elementary school, and Shin-Min Junior high school with three residential buildings totally included. The building with Shan-Yang Lyceum 「向陽學苑」hanging on the door flat is the only remaining one. In year 1998, the responsible authority for jurisdiction , Civil Affairs , held monuments review meeting and permitted Shan-Yang Lyceum「向陽學苑」as Taipei municipality historical sites and recommended it with the title “Ex- Japanese army Beitou Branch of Taipei Army Garrison Sanatorium.” Then in Taipei “City Hall meeting,” it had been settled as the Taipei municipality historical sites. The main reasons were: ***In the early beginning period of Japanese governing, it’s been used as the military sanatorium via the application of Beitou hot spring. It kept close relationship to history of Local Development. ***It’s a huge Japanese style building with characteristics at the entrance, front and rear gallery; boasting its unique building value. ***The present situation of the building is complete, with broad courtyard, and ancient trees. The overall environment has been well-maintained. The national government after the civil war, turned into Taiwan. “Ex- Japanese army Beitou Branch of Taipei Army Garrison Sanatorium” was taken over by Military units of national army. The sanatorium extends the original hot spring culture and was facilitated with hot spring house, named as “Su-Son hot spring “ (宿松溫泉) where two small scale bathing units were installed to serve the employees and guests. It’s proposed to be “Spirit decompression center(精神減壓中心)“ and “Spa chronic medical rehabilitation centers(慢性病溫泉醫療復健中心)” for national army in the future. The heritage repairing and reutilization process - Year 2009, November- After the inspection and survey by Mr. Kao(高華柱), Secretary of Defense ,in order to express the army’s support and protection on National cultural assets, he instructed to start the heritage restoration and reutilization engineering work per rule of cultural assets (文資法). Year 2012- Restoration project groundbreaking ceremony was presided by Colonel Dean Gu (顧毓琦). In his starting speech, he emphasized that the construction and monitoring units must take care the ”safety maintenance“ and “environmental protection“ to keep good communication and interaction with local residents, in addition to following the construction specification stipulated. The main purpose is to restore the historic style of heritage smoothly and to maintain the meaning, value, and spirit of the cultural assets protection. The restoration work was split into four years, four stages to be proceeded with. Year 2010- It had to compile restoration and re-utilization as per the planned schedule. Year 2011- Requirements were to start the “planning design” and “bidding “, to complete the relevant “restoration and reutilization work” and to do “heritage maintenance management plan” continuously. Most important of all, to make sure the work could be completed on schedule. The end. ************************************************************************* You may get access to following web pages to see the pictures:
