Dear Friend:
The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recently awarded grants of more than $31 million to help give California workers high-quality training and employment services that will lead to good jobs in health care and other high-growth industries. Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, these grants will enable community colleges, community-based organizations, and state workforce agencies to deliver training for career-track jobs with good pay and benefits.
I am very pleased that Youth Policy Institute will receive a grant of $3,623,473 as part of this award.
Even as many industries have experienced lay-offs and job losses, the health care industry continues to generate jobs. At the same time, innovative California companies in high-growth and emerging industries are poised to grow and add jobs.
To help meet the demand for skilled workers, DOL is investing in grant projects that address workforce shortages while providing workers with paths to career-enhancing opportunities in health care and in other high-growth industries such as high tech, biotech, and renewable energy.
All projects will lead to employment for participants through training programs that support advancement along a defined career pathway and result in an employer or industry-recognized certificate or degree.
These investments will help both employed and unemployed workers train for good jobs in industries that need a skilled workforce. You can count on me to keep working to bring more federal investments to California to help put our people to work in good jobs.
Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator
