On an ATM at a 7-11, I found a unwanted balance receipt showing a balance of 2.1 million NT$. The first feeling was that this must be a rich person, simply because, in Europe , people normally don´t have such an amount of cash available on the current account. European´s cash is either taxed(about 30% on income ) or used for holidays on the beach or traveling. When one person in Taiwan leaves this amount at his or her current account which only gives 0.55% per year instead of putting in savings account giving 2% per year, he seems not to care the 2500 NT$ interest income per MONTH. Or, he needs this amount of 2.1 million for day to day using. Both showing he or she is rich person from my standard anyway! This reminds me a popular saying that Taiwnese cash flooding to one´s knee. However, during this staying in Taiwan, I found people on TV criticizing a lot about the current Bien government and ones of the most popular sayings are: 1.school kids have no money for lunch. This reminds me that this 2.1 million cash´s interest can pay for one kid´s school lunch. Another TV adertisement of Kentucky fried chicken shows a mother was so happy like winning Lotto, when she finds her son is able to finish the new promoted K´s set menu. I think Taiwan´s cash seems flooding much higher now than knee but of less and less people. 2. people committing suicide. Honestly, it is hard for me to link this thing to a democratic government. When a society is exerting all his best pursuing material and money, it is normal that more and more people are getting frustrated of failing to achieve that high target or even risking his or her future to a gambling level. However, nobody seems to have a solution for this new society, but there is a poster on Taipei street with a master monk trying to save some by saying : thinking 2 more minutes and you can find more ways to go on instead of committing suicide. I found this same poster also presented at CKS airport when I was back to Europe. Anyway, I found it is absurd that if one will go abroad for committing suicide? It is really rare that a poster like this presented at the gate of a nation. I am afraid that thinking 2 more minutes won´t really save more Taiwanese than persuading people to reduce their all kinds of high desire by 50%. |
