“Sylvia” is a 2003 British biographical film directed by Christine Jeffs. The movie tells the true story of the romance between notable poets Sylvia Plath casted by Gwyneth Paltrow and Ted Hughes starring by Daniel Craig. These two people met at Cambridge in 1950 and the film ends with Sylvia Plath's suicide in 1963. The film starts with the prologue “Sylvia Plath was a complicated woman. She, who once famously said: ‘Dying is an art, like everything else. I do it exceptionally well.’” The title character Sylvia has a great talent for writing, especially in poetry. Her first work is published when she is only eight years old. Later, her father’s unexpected death was the very first tragedy of her life, which gives her the reason to claim that she was only purely happy until she was nine years old. In 1950, she is an outstanding student at Smith College on a literary scholarship. At the same time, she also begins suffering from extreme depression. Sylvia has attempted to commit suicide but fails. Afterwards, she meets charismatic and respected poet, Ted Hughes, at a Cambridge party. They fall for each other, eventually come to be married, and have two children. However, the marriage doesn’t seem to go smoothly as they have in mind. After Hughes left her for another woman, her depression finally brings her superb potential for writing poems but unfortunately leads to her suicide as well. Frankly speaking, I am truly sorry for Sylvia especially for what she’s been through. During the conversation between Ted and Sylvia’s mother, we are informed that “Sylvia loves him because he is different from other people and he frightens her.” Indeed, the social status and charm of Ted leave an irresistible impression on Sylvia. Even though she has a gift for writing, she later lives in the shadow of her prestigious and successful poet husband, which prevents her from starting her own writing career. No wonder her insecurity, suspicion and jealousy grow step by step under this circumstances. Near the end of the film, she realizes she herself is the main reason that drives Ted away by saying “if you fear something enough, you can make it happen.” After Sylvia is separated with Ted, she has a difficulty leading a normal life with two children due to her fragile emotional status and mental breakdown. Ironically thanks to the misery, Sylvia is able to genuinely explore the dark depths of her soul and to write the brilliant poetry that earned her fame only after her death. 2. 2011/06/08 00:39 “Oliver Twist” is a 2005 film, based on the 1838 classic novel of the same title written by Charles Dickens. The story deals mainly about the poverty and crime in London in the 1830s. The title character Oliver Twist is a young orphan, whose mother died when giving the birth. Therefore, he is brought to a workhouse as a young poor labor offered by little amount of food. Afterwards, Oliver Twist is sent to a coffin maker, whose wife has a terrible impression on him at the first sight. He gets into a serious fight with an apprentice, who calls names of him mother and thus is punished with spank. Upon realizing it is not the place he belongs to, he runs away on foot, heading for London. When he arrives at the city, he meets Jack, a thief who takes him back to the house full of homeless young pickpockets with an old villainous-looking leader, Fagin. Oliver joins the gang without being aware that they make a living by nothing but stealing. Later, he is adopted by a kind-hearted wealthy man, Mr. Brownlow. Unfortunately, when running the errand for Brownlow, Oliver is again caught by Fagin’s gang. However, Nancy, one member of the gang, shows sympathy for Oliver and decides to reveal the plot. Eventually, Fagin is arrested and Oliver ends up living with Mr. Brownlow, who treats him right. Among the characters, I think of Oliver and Nancy as remarkable people. Oliver Twist leaves not only people in the film but us audience a poor yet lovely impression. I found him a kind of orphan who craves for love, care, and a comfortable place to settle. However, he is dragged into a criminal group and his miserable life seems to start just now. Along his escape and being sent away, he’s stayed different houses and met lots of people, such as Mr. Sowerberry, Bill Sikes, and so forth, which put the story together. Despite of the fact that Oliver’s born in corrupt surroundings, he doesn’t appear to develop a negative or passive attitude toward his life. At the end of the story, Oliver even visits Fagin, who is behind bars and pray for him, which shows a great deal of humanity and morality. Nancy, on the other hand, plays a significant role in the movie. Being a prostitute and a lover of Bill Sikes, she doesn’t seem to have any other choices for her life. Therefore, it must be a tough decision for her to risk her life as a betrayer helping Oliver to be rescued. The virtue and kindness of her are apparently displayed in the film. Yet, not every orphan owns such an adorable appearance as Oliver, which has him firstly suffer from poverty, starvation, danger and finally deserve the happiness. |
