1. "Much ado about Nothing" 2011/06/08 00:45
This TV movie is derived from Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado about Nothing.

The story focuses on two pair of lovers, Benedick and Beatrice, and Claudio and Hero. Personally I think this BBC adaption as an interesting version. It gives the audience another point to see Shakespeare’s drama. The director uses modern language to retell this story, but it’s hard for me to find the original character and plot. In fact almost every character differs with the original version except Benedick and Claudio.

In this movie Hero becomes an outgoing and lively blonde girl. Beatrice is still clever but more serious. Don John this character gets a lot performance in this version. He acts a villain role and a loser. Generally speaking, no one would like this character. After all I most dislike role is Claudio. He is a poor-spirited and silly man as he is in the original text. What a men would ask his lover does she sex with another men in a public wedding ceremony.

Though the director deleted and adapted the unreasonable plots to adapt in modern times, there are still something strange. When Beatrice implies Benedick to kill Claudio, this line came as a surprise to me. I’m not sure that Hero and Beatrice’s friendship is strong enough to make Beatrice say that. Honestly there are not many details about how the characters develop their love relationship or friendship. In my opinion their love is too sudden and fragile. I’m not surprised that Hero and Claudio break up after all. Fortunately, I’m happy that Hero rejects Claudio’s second proposal, though it’s not true to original context. Maybe it could be a symbol of independence of women in the marriage.

Overall, I would recommend this adaption to people who aren’t interested in Shakespeare’s drama. If you see it as an original romantic comedy, you can get a lot fun in it. However if you want to know what’s the essence about “Much Ado about Nothing” this classic comedy, maybe this retold story is not so proper. Setting Times is different; the spirit it conveyed is naturally different.

2. My reflection on Oliver! 2011/06/08 00:13

"Oliver!" is a 1968 a musical film directed by Carol Reed the film is based on stage musical Oliver! Both the film and play are derived from Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist. It’s tale of orphan, Oliver Twist, who runs away from the orphanage and starts to live with a group of boys trained to be pickpockets by elderly mentor Fagin. I truly take a lot pleasures in this movie. The music, the dance, and the scene surprise me so much. Though it’s directed by 1968, it seems that it’s still a good and amazing film nowadays.

There are many colorful characters in this story such as Oliver, Fagin and Nancy. I could only feel pity for Nancy ’s death in the end. I like her characteristic most. She is a lively, kind, and full of energy women. Unfortunately, her love for Bill Sikes and her moral sense come into conflict when Sikes abuses Oliver. Though Bill Sikes is a bastard and insults her not only one time, she still loves him. This is a mysterious thing for me. When she sings “as long as he needs me” this song, I think I get something from it. Being someone’s need could comfort the lonely person.

This film exposed the cruel treatment of many waif-children in London in the Dickens era, but the director deals it in a more pleasant way. However, when I see a child in ragged clothes slip from the chimney, I still feel something odd. In contrast with it, my favorite plot is “who will buy?” this song. Oliver sees the joyous and peaceful scene of this district that he has never ever experienced before. This plot truly depicts his hope for continuing this new life. The happiest thing is at last Oliver could realize this dream.

After I watched this movie, I have no doubt that why this film could win Academy Awards. I enjoy watching this film. The dance, the song and the plot are delicately arranged from the musical play and the original novel. Adapted as a film, I think the attraction still remains, moreover, increases.
