　這首歌的誕生，緣於 Kerry Livgren 有一天拿起木吉他做指法練習，她的太太經過時聽見了，覺得那一段和弦感覺好美，便鼓勵他寫出完整的旋律及歌詞。當時 Kerry Livgren 正在閱讀一本詩集，是位美國原住民詩人的作品，其中有一行詩 句：" For all we are is dust in the wind 畢竟我們都是風中的塵埃"，令他思及人生在世，無論 是賢昧智愚、風光落魄，終需與世界告別。感嘆之餘，Kerry Livgren 寫下歌詞完成了這首醒世歌曲。

　由於和樂團過去的風格差異頗大，Kerry Livgren 對團員們的反應不抱任何希望。孰料四位團員聽過之後，先是一陣異樣的沉默，然後異口同聲表示非錄這首歌不可。於是在大家的堅持下，這首歌收錄在《 Point of No Return 》這張專輯。

　" Dust in the wind 風中之塵 "是他們第一首不插電的歌曲，雖然是趕上末班車，卻成為堪薩斯合唱團最受歡迎的單曲。在百大單曲排行榜上有第六名的名次，在搖滾、鄉村和成人抒情榜也都大有斬獲，是 70 年代最具代表性的歌曲之一。現今的西洋老歌合輯，它很少被遺漏，對有志於學習民謠吉他的朋友們，這首歌也是必練的曲目之一。
