大道之行也，
　When the great Word of heaven prevails,
天下為公，
　All things under heaven are shared equally and justly.
選賢與能，
　Society elects wise and capable persons as leaders, and
講信修睦。
　People speak with trust and cultivate good neighborhoods.

故人不獨親其親，
　They do not regard only their own parents as parents,
不獨子其子。
　Nor do they treat only their own children as children.
使老有所終，
　Provisions are made for the aged till their death,
壯有所用，
　Adults are given proper employments,
幼有所長，
　And all children are well supported.
鰥寡孤獨廢疾者，
　Widows, widowers, orphans, lonely elders, the sick and disabled
皆有所養，
　are all well taken care of.
男有分，
　Men have their own proper roles,
女有歸。
　Women find their right husbands and homes.

貨惡其棄於地也，
　While they dislike to see wealth abandoned on the ground,
不必藏於己，
　Yet they do not necessarily keep it for their own use.
力惡其不出於身也，
　While they hate not to exert their own efforts,
不必為己。
　Yet they do not expend the efforts only for themselves.
是故謀閉而不興，
　Thus, evil schemes are repressed,
盜竊亂賊而不作，
　Robbers, thieves, and other lawless elements fail to arise,
故外戶而不閉，
　So that outer doors do not have to be shut and locked.
是謂「大同」。
　This is called "the World of Great Harmony".


【注解】

本篇翻譯的重點在「大道之行也，天下為公」的「大道」和「公」三個字。

「道」是什麽呢？「道」可以分成「天道、人道、王道、正道…」等等。

依照孔子「天地君親師人」六倫的排列，「天」在一切之上，是萬物的根本，在孔子的信仰裏「天道」指的是「天命、上帝的法則誡命」，所以這裏所說的「大道」是「天道、上帝的命令」的意思。

孔子曾經說：「天何言哉！四時行焉，百物生焉」。天父上帝有他的語言，上帝不用人類口頭的語言推動四時的運行、不用人類口頭的語言使百物生生不息。那麽上帝到底用什麽力量使四時運行、使百物生生不息呢？簡單的來說，上帝所用的是他自己的法則（天道）。上帝的法則是萬物的根本、宇宙的主宰，所以堯舜禹三代把禪讓王位的大權交給上帝（肆類于上帝、清意以昭待上帝命）；商湯敬畏上帝，不敢不帶兵去討伐邪惡的夏桀（予畏上帝，不敢不正）；周文王一生小心翼翼敬拜上帝（維此文王，小心翼翼，昭事上帝）。而孔子雖然是聖人，但他還時時不忘敬拜上帝、景仰天道（郊社之禮，所以事上帝也；聖人亨，以享上帝；欽崇天道，永保天命）。

老子說：「道者，萬物之奧；道生一，一生二，二生三，三生萬物；天地始，萬物母；可以為天下母；萬物之宗。人法地，地法天，天法道，道法自然。」…「道」是創造萬物的主宰/母親、天地的始祖。「道」創造了一個宇宙，這一個宇宙衍生出兩種因子（離子），當二種不同的因子（離子）結合時産生第三類物質（分子），當許多第三類的物質（分子）結合後産生了萬物。人要遵循大地運行的法則，大地的運行要遵循天體運行的法則，天體之運行要遵循道的法則，「道」則要遵循自然而然（自本自根，未有天地，自古以固存）的法則。

〈聖經．約翰福音〉第一章說：In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God。這段話的大意是「太初有道，道與上帝同在，道就是上帝。」

因此在這裏，「大道」可以翻譯成「the great way of heaven」，不過翻譯成「the great Word of heaven」 或「the great Word of God」更貼切。

至於「公」是什麽意思呢？這裏的「公」有兩層意思：一是「公有」，二是「公義」。

「公有」是指天下的事物由公衆（public）一起擁有，不能讓一個人或某個集團獨佔。

「公義」是指社會的架構和人權是公平公義的（equal、just、righteous)，不是個人或某個組織可以壟斷的。因此「天下為公」可以翻譯成「all things under heaven are shared equally and justly」。
