Benadryl: the generic name for Benadryl is Diphenhydramine. It is used to relieve red, irritated, itchy, watery eyes; sneezing; and runny nose caused by hay fever, allergies or the common cold. It works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction. It belongs to the class: antihistamines. Benadryl comes in the following forms: tablets, a rapidly disintegrating (dissolving) tablet, a capsule, a liquid-filled capsule, a dissolving strip and liquid. This medicine should be taken every 4 to 6 hours. The strength that Benadryl comes in is: capsules 25mg and 50mg, tablets 12.5mg 25mg and 50mg, strips 12.5mg and 25mg, and liquid 12.5mg per teaspoon (5mL). Side effects of Benadryl are: drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation and muscle weakness. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while taking Benadryl.

Claritin: the generic name for Claritin is Loratadine. It is used to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergies, such as sneezing, watery eyes and runny nose and itching of the nose and throat and it also relieves itching from hives. Claritin comes in the following forms: tablets, syrup and rapidly disintegrating tablets. It is taken once a day, with or without food. The strength that Claritin comes in is: 5mg and 10mg. The side effects for Claritin are: headache, dry mouth, nosebleed, difficulty falling asleep/staying asleep, weakness and diarrhea.

Zyrtec: the generic name for Zyrtec is Cetrizine. It is used to prevent or treat symptoms of hay fever and to treat cold or allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes or runny nose. It can also be used to treat itching and swelling caused by chronic urticartia (hives). Zyrtec comes in the following forms: tablet, a chewable tablet and syrup. It is taken once a day, with or without food and it should be taken around the same time every day. The strength that Zyrtec comes in is: 5mg and 10mg. The side effects for Zyrtec are: drowsiness, excessive tiredness, dry mouth, stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting. Zyrtec can impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid drinking alcohol.
