Master Lee Sun-Don - a Taiwan-born writer, music composer, and incredibly talented painter - incorporates the teachings of Buddha into his artistry and showcased this in his most recent gallery opening, October 4, 2007.  Through a delicate balance of color, symbolism, whimsical creativity and precision, Master Lee transfers his own mental and physical energy into a sort of metaphoric storytelling.  In his paintings, Master Lee illustrates a path to enlightenment and captures the Zen of art.

The gallery’s grand opening, which was located at

413 North Beverly Drive
in Beverly Hills, was an amazing scene full of many things to admire.  Set up in the middle of the large room, glass cases displayed fine jewelry, artifacts, and precious stones designed by Master Lee Sun-Don.  Taiwanese jewel and stone experts kindly showcased each piece to guests as other guests toured the extensive, yet intimate gallery.

Walking from one art work to the next, an interesting unfolding occurred.  Each painting had its own story, a unique origin and an individual journey from the artist’s mind to the canvas.  Both literally and figuratively speaking, each painting’s story was told, as a brief description beside each one detailed the artist’s thoughts or derivation of the concept behind the art.  Some donned bright bold colors, while others took a more modest approach with pastel hues.  Some seemed hopeful, while others embodied a sense of darkness.  Nonetheless, every painting had both subtle and obvious depictions.  The utilizing of pyramids, crosses, and other rigid geometric shapes added a unique sense of history and character to the feathery blends of interwoven colors.

Although most of Master Lee’s paintings seemed to possess a certain watercolor factor that required its viewers to long ponder its meaning, others had distinct symbols and pictures that vividly stood out and captured immediate attention and opinion.  Some of Master Lee’s work included a technique defined by the term “ totem,” which is recognized as synonymic with unity and balance of universal energies in eastern culture.  Master Lee used various arrangements of lines, colors, and other artistic factors to express cosmic energies in his work.  The first to ever incorporate such an integration of Buddhist ideologies with contemporary western art in oil painting, Master Lee has been dubbed the “ Pioneer of Totemic Energy Oil Painting.”  His approach is both innovative and thought-provoking.

The evening was full of culture and included variety from beginning to end.  A small handful of celebrities attended and pranced delicately from painting to painting.  Servers walked by presenting plates of beautifully decorated hors d’oeuvres, while a separate outdoor area housed a small bar serving fruit-infused teas and sparkling water.  At the conclusion of this event, Master Lee Sun-Don further showcased his talent in an “ Impromptu” exhibition in which he demonstrated his painting techniques in front of a live audience.  His final product was simplistic, yet beautiful.  Meeting Master Lee was an added bonus.  He signed my copy of his 2007 Autumn-Winter Exhibitions art book and spoke with me for several minutes.  I left feeling intrigued by his work and open-minded toward his unique style.
