you walked into school for the first time Clutching your mommy’s hand, staring at the other kids in awe Once upon a time, you got lost in some supermarket Wandering down the maze of isles as your eyes begin to tear Once upon a time, You played “House” and bossed your friends around “You be the Daddy and I’ll be the Mommy, and she’ll be our baby” Once upon a time, You rode that old wagon down the steep hill you’re warned to stay away from Clinking and clanking you went until you fell and scraped your knee but won’t regret Once upon a time, You finally made it to fifth grade Proudly walking down the halls as one of the “big kids” Once upon a time, You lost your best friend because of the new kid in school Of course the new kid is more interesting than you so why talk to your friend anymore? Once upon a time, You got jealous of that girl’s Britney Spears backpack And went home whining to your parents for one too Once upon a time, You were a child. |
