After a lengthy voyage across the Alpha Ocean and a brief stopover at Beta Bay, World of Warships has at last arrived into port, hulls gleaming and cannons primed for the final version. Its strange to think the game was announced four years ago, at the same time as the disappointing World of Warplanes, and well before the excellent mobile version of World of Tanks. A vast amount of time and effort has clearly gone into this mighty vessel of a game. But was it worth the wait, or should the project have been scuttled long before now?

Wargaming preserved game menu from their previous games with some new additions. One of the new extensions is leveling of the game account. For each new level you get various rewards.Developers got most likely influenced by competition, because another new concept are daily quests. After successfully clearing them, you obtain game currency called silvers. These coins are used for buying new ships and upgrades. Additionally, there are Signal Flags which after installation provide all kinds of bonuses for your vessel. To obtain these flags you need to complete various achievements.

There are some balance issues when it comes to certain ships. Much as it is in World of Tanks, its difficult to be successful with some ships. Though this can be due to your play style, it also can be due to the ship being outclassed for its tier. For example, some Japanese battleships have only three sets of guns, and each one has high dispersion, so if you fire a range-finding shot, youve already used one-third of your salvo. Even with such high dispersion, your follow-up shots will likely miss their mark. On the flip side, there are some ships that just seem to do well in a variety of situations. The basic controls are simple: “W” and “S” to accelerate or slow with “A” and “D” for port or starboard. A compass rose on the map shows heading and view. When an enemy comes into sight, it becomes circled and SHIFT brings up the close-in binocular view with an aiming bar. “R” puts out fires and repairs damage. Single shots are fired by a left-click, ripple fire by holding down the left mouse button and a full broadside by a double click. The game can be played well with just these controls but more detailed controls can be viewed here. The same screen shows damage in silhouette and color, horizontal bars indicating how the primary turrets are loaded and icons for ammunition type, torpedoes, and planes.

Co-op battles are fought between a team of eight to ten online players and a similar number of bots. These clashes are good for learning the basics, getting a feel for a new ship and leveling up. Random battles are the real test of players’ skills. Fought between teams of online players, the rookies will be able to see how the big boys play. Victory in both battle types is decided by either sinking all enemy ships or having enough friendly ships in the enemy base area to capture it. Campaigns, opened at Level Eight, consist of several missions, each of which has many tasks with different goals. The length of battles rests on what tier of ships are involved. While ships are reasonably historical, the battles are not, resembling rugby scrums.
