| Asphalt games from Gameloft have typically done well to please casual mobile gamers for its impressive graphics, fast-paced arcade-style racing experience and simplistic controls. Since 2013, Android, iOS and Windows users have been playing Asphalt 8: Airborne. The game has been lauded for its graphics among other things, which is why it has continued to attract users in 2018. But now, we finally have its successor - Asphalt 9: Legends. Gameloft takes advantage of the relatively fixed iOS platforms by locking quality settings per device, while Android gets three selectable quality settings instead: default, performance and high quality. The latter increases resolution while performance strips back the pixel-count and post-process features like motion blur. Playing on default on the S9+, its a visual match for the top-end iOS version - just somewhat choppier in motion. Primarily designed for lower-end Windows devices, the PC version still holds up - and with resolution scaling support, ultra-wide functionality and 60fps action, its a fascinating comparison point - the chance to see the game running with all technical constraints removed. Visually, Asphalt 9 is stunning and quite possibly the best-looking game on the mobile platform today. There are several factors that go into this so lets look at some of them.One of the most important things visually in a racing game is conveying the sense of speed. Arcade games in particular go for a more dramatic effect and this is usually achieved using motion blur. Motion blur is best described as slowing down the shutter speed of your video camera, so instead of everything being captured crisply, it leaves a trail of motion. While not ideal for capturing real world motion, in video games it helps make motion appear smoother, especially at lower frame rates. With Asphalt 9, the game defaults to "TouchDrive" controls, which allow you to focus on shifting lanes to hit specific jumps or nitro power-ups, drifting and pulling ridiculous 360-degree spin maneuvers to take out nearby opponents, and using nitro boosts. You dont have to worry about hitting the gas or steering at all in this mode, and can focus on going fast, smashing your competition, and appreciating the gorgeous graphics! There are other control options available including on-screen controls and tilt-steering, but honestly, youre best off playing with TouchDrive on to start until you get a handle on the game. Considering how fast-paced the action is here, youre best off just focusing on drifting and hitting your nitro boosts at the right times so you can cross the finish line in first place every time. Youll start out racing in career mode, but you unlock the online multiplayer mode by the time you complete the first section of career mode.
