What is stinky tofu and why is it such a popular treat in Taiwan?
Stinky Tofu is a popular dish in Taiwan and South Asia. It is so popular in Taiwan and it often gets picked up by international travel or cooking shows. Stinky Tofu is usually sold by the street vendors in the night market; however, many specialty stinky tofu places can also be found all over Taiwan. Walking on the streets; you would have no problem finding these vendors from a block away by its smell!
Stinky tofu can be eaten cold, steamed, stewed, or most commonly, fried and is often accompanied by chili sauce.
From a distance, the odor of stinky tofu is said to resemble that of rotten garbage or manure. Some people have compared it to the taste of blue cheese while others have compared it to rotten meat. It is said the more it smells, the 'better' its flavor.
