| Kazakhstan The Republic of Kazakhstan is a new country. This former Soviet State became independent after the Soviet Union collapsed. Until 150 years ago this large area was inhabited mainly by nomads who lived in felt tents, known as yurts, and who moved around to find lush fields for their livestock. Society was organized around large families and the economy was based on livestock; goats, sheep, cows, horses and even camels. Nowadays Kazakhstan is a modern country with a large amount of valuable mineral resources like oil, gas and uranium. Kazakhstan is the 9th largest country in the world, some 2.7 million sq km, and has a population of approximately 16 million people (similar to the Netherlands). Most of the country is steppe. These enormous plains vary from lush green grass in winter to dry brown areas in the hot summer. The eastern and southeastern border is made up of very high mountain ranges. The languages spoken in Kazakhstan are Russian and Kazakh. All the writing is in Cyrillic and Kazakh. It is important to be able to transliterate Cyrillic before coming to Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is a secular nation. Although churches were closed during Soviet times, people still consider themselves to belong to a religion. Ethnic Kazakhs tend to be Muslims and the ethnic Russians are generally Russian Orthodox Christians.
