When still at work, I was in charge of revenue control of the whole company. I often told my co-woekers that keeping the revenue intact is our ultimate end, and the different auditings are just the various means to serve the end. Therefore, we should not rely on the means subject to change in time; instead, we should keep searching for the best way to achieve the end. In short, never mingle the means and the end.

Attached below is a response from a reader to a report of ex "ex-president" Ma, who is now visiting Mainland China. Obviously, Mr. Ma is trying to maintain the peace across the strait. But the reader reminded him that "peace is only a means, not an end."  

和平只是手段，不是目的，
或换言之而言，和平只是阶段性手段，而不是终极性和平目的。
台湾太多的人，把现阶段的和平混淆成目标，就是妄图掩盖其拒绝统一的目的。
我们的和平是为统一服务的，统一是为了达成最大的、长久的和平，但过程中的和平只能是也必然是手段和选项。
1949年，节节败退的国民政府派代表团来北平，就是来谈和平的，但他们的和平与我们的和平是不同的，
他们期望通过和平谈判而能苟延残喘，而我们则希望通过谈判而达到永久的和平。
随着毛泽东主席和朱德总司令发布《向全国进军的命令》后，百万雄师过大江，短暂的和平的确被打破了，但赢得的是全国的、长期的和平。
我们不能再延续农夫与蛇的故事，没有雷霆的手段，就不能达成长久的和平。
中国大陆从未排斥和平的手段，但台湾那些所谓蓝色绿色白色的人，都将和平作为目标了，其目的就是要延缓、拖延甚至是长久拒绝国家统一。
我们绝不能拘泥于此，必须着眼于中华民族的统一复兴大业，和平统一的手段不能放弃，但更强硬的手段则是基本。
