Attached below is a reportage about the brief biography of Prof. Huang and his masterpiece "1587, a Year of No Significance: The Ming Dynasty in Decline" at https://www.toutiao.com/a6570871422153916942/. I do like his macro viewpoint on studying history, and his methodology of overview on history from seemingly irrelevant incidents, quite different from those of traditional historians. The other reason that I like Mr Huang is he had a similar background as that of my father who is only a year older than him. In the summer of 1937 when Mr Huang finished his freshman year in Nankai University, while my father finished his sophomore year in Hosei University, Japan, Sino-Japanese War broke out. Both of them quitted their studies at once and entered into Central Military Academy as officiers-to-be for fighting Japanese army. Since then, they suffered many hardships throughout tumultuous, star-crossed modern China. They might have complaints about their fates, but they had never lost confidence in China until the end of their days. P.S. A bonus "用全球化史观看明清易代". I think it may be an aricle written by a foreign historian. https://www.toutiao.com/a6569810428812067341/ |
