A Fright in the Night

“I can’t believe we’re going to be sleeping in a tent alone!” Miku exclaimed happily when she arrived at my house for our sleepover.

“I can’t wait!” I shouted. I couldn’t sit still. I ran around the living room while Miku jumped up and down in her pajamas. “Best day ever!” I shouted. We put on our shoes, opened the back door, and pushed open the screen dancing about. We stood still on the porch for a while with giant grins on our faces.

“Wow! It looks so different in the night!” Miku whispered to me in awe. The moonlight shone on the tall grass and shimmered. It lit up the whole backyard! The tent’s dark color turned a bright orange.

“Let’s go!” I pointed to the tent and smiled. We climbed up the bricks quickly and stepped on the dead leaves making a crunching sound under our feet. I unzipped the door and stepped inside. It smelled of nice clean blankets and I snuggled into my favorite. I dove inside it and rolled around laughing.

“Do you want to get your flashlight and tell each others scary stories?” Miku asked me in her scariest monster voice. I pretended to shudder and said, “I call the big one!” I dove for the big flashlight and turned it on. The tent instantly grew brighter. I started to tell the story with excitement when all of a sudden, rain came pattering down all at once and through the windows. The rain soaked the grass and puddles started to form. Mud sloshed everywhere and dirt turned black as night. Ping! ping! ping! ping! ping! The rain hit the tent’s top and it rolled down the sides. It looked like we were underneath a waterfall!

“Close the windows! Zipper it up!” I shouted over the racket. Down came more rain followed by thunder crashing and roaring. We began screaming wildly and stuffed our pillows on our heads like earmuffs.

“Ahhhhhhhhh!!!” We screamed on the top of our lungs desperate for someone to hear us. Just then the zipper started to move and I heard someone or something rustling outside.

“Hide under the covers and try not to be seen!” Miku instructed. I flung myself into the blankets, my heart pumping, when my dad poked his head inside the tent holding an umbrella.

“Come on!” He shouted over the roaring sound. “We’re going inside!”

“Whew! I thought it was the ghost in the story you were telling me!” Miku said relaxing a bit. I sighed in relief. The knot in my stomach started to unwind. My dad walked us one by one back inside as we stepped over big puddles of water. When I finally stepped inside the house, I sat on the floor and began taking my soaking shoes off.

“My shoes are so wet that water comes out when I step on them!” I whined. Miku looked at me with a sly expression on her face.

“Uh Oh! It better not be another idea of hers!” I thought to myself.

“Hey Laura,” Miku gestured to me, “are you ever thinking about doing that again?” I squeezed out the water in my shoes sighing and put them on the vent to dry and said,

“You know what, I’m willing to try,” and we held out our hands and shook vigorously until we were both lying on the floor laughing.
