The world is not as it seems in Erik Johansson’s mind-bending photograph manipulations (featured previously). Here is a world where mirrored ‘M.C. Escher stairways’ really exist, where land flows like water, and where small towns float on the sea in glass bottles. Each illustration is a detailed masterpiece to behold.

Every one of his digital manipulations hide secrets, but what they conceal the most is the incredible amount of physical, real-world work that went into them. Not only does Johansson sketch a layout for his ideas first, but he also captures many of his images on location and builds intricate models to simulate the look he’s after. Just get a look at his behind-the-scenes video for the making of ‘Landfall.’ The final image has 230 layers and a lot of ingenuity.
