James Pan

Throughout my application, my passion for the medical field is evident. Whether it’s the personal exigence of my mother’s cancer diagnosis or my grandmother’s struggle with Alzheimer’s, my journey reflects a deep commitment to this path. From choosing biology-related electives to interning at a university lab and competing in science fairs, I’ve consistently demonstrated my enthusiasm for exploring this field further and delving deeper into its possibilities at Johns Hopkins University.

Although my school didn’t offer opportunities for advanced research, I didn’t back down. Instead, I took the initiative to reach out to a local university professor and, alongside my peers, conducted a year-long research project that earned a prominent award at a science fair. Adapting to the challenges of a professional research environment was far from easy, but our passion and dedication ultimately helped us overcome obstacles and gain the trust of the professor.
This trust led to a recommendation to collaborate with researchers at National Taiwan University, where I contributed to a project that resulted in a published paper and an opportunity to compete abroad in international science fairs. Rather than being deterred by limited resources or challenges, I embraced them as opportunities to grow.
The resilience I demonstrated through these experiences highlights my ability to adapt and thrive in any community, showcasing my determination to make the most of every opportunity.

I also demonstrate a deep passion for helping others. After receiving support from an online tutoring platform, I felt compelled to give back to the community that shaped me. By dedicating significant effort as a tutor, I earned recognition as a top 5% tutor and even received the President’s Volunteer Service Award. In school, I participate in clubs focused on protecting the environment and supporting marginalized elementary students by teaching them English, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Additionally, I co-founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping stray animals. While our resources are limited, we strive to make a meaningful impact with the tools we have.

The college application process is undoubtedly a challenging journey, and many students place immense pressure on themselves to aim for prestigious schools. I completely understand this mindset, as I’ve been working toward this goal since elementary school. However, I’ve come to realize that college rankings aren’t everything. A rejection isn’t a reflection of your worth as a person but rather an indication that the college believes you may not be the right fit for their community. In the long run, you’ll find yourself at a school where you truly belong—a place that will support your growth and aspirations.
Rather than seeing high school accomplishments as merely steps for college applications, it’s important to recognize how much personal growth you gain throughout the journey. The college you attend is just one station in your life, but the experiences and skills you acquire along the way will shape who you become.
Lastly, you only go through this process once, so make it count. My advice is to start early. As a procrastinator, I didn’t begin my essays until late summer, and even when I had drafts, they required countless revisions—and sometimes rewrites. It’s a normal part of the process. Luck plays a big role too, so trust yourself, start early, and enjoy the journey. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions—I’d be happy to help.
