亮點一: themed, coherent ECs (tell a story instead of flexing your achievements)
My application revolves around a central theme inspired by my grandpa’s dementia.
This theme is consistently reflected in my ECs, showing initiative, passion, and depth.
Let’s see how it works:
1Research: I published a conference paper analyzing the hierarchical relationship between motor control and linguistic systems. (In my personal essay, I linked my research findings back to my grandpa’s dementia, using the metaphor of a "clean slate" to explore how fading memories create opportunities for new insights.)
2、中研院 neurosci program: I explored MRIs and brain-computer interfaces, focusing on restoring mobility and communication for patients. (reinforced my determination to use technology to alleviate suffering for people like my grandpa)
3Innovation: Motivated by observing my grandpa’s difficulty eating due to dementia and aging, I invented a smart denture that collects chewing data and provides personalized suggestions to improve efficiency. This project was later awarded by Taipei Medical University. (practical application of knowledge) You guys can pretty much see how my ECs are woven together, and how the “central theme” shapes my journey.

亮點二:An unique talent that differentiates me from other applicants
I have been doing dressage and showjumping since the age of 5.
l   mastered my skills through 13+ years of training and participated in nationwide championships, winning 2 gold medals. (testament to the hard work)
l   hosted mentoring sessions for younger riders → (showing my values beyond the trophies and titles, e.g. the ability to give back and help others overcome obstacles based on my experience as an equestrian)

亮點三Founder of a non-profit org. for local stray animals
Leading such an initiative that spans across 9 countries not only proved my ability to coordinate across cultural and geographical barriers (we all know NYU loves bridge builders) but also my determination to address pressing community issues outside of academics.

鼓勵學弟妹見賢思齊,分享申請大學的經驗與訣竅:
I’ll be honest—I did not have the best GPA. I’m not just talking about a little below average; I knew it was a glaring weakness in my application. So I worked extra hard on my ECs and essays to stand out. My main essay revolved around a pretty common and cliche topic: an ill family member. But instead of falling into the trap of “trauma dumping” or self-pity, I offered a unique perspective on dementia, focusing on insights rather than the loss. Not a single word was wasted on whining and sobbing.
Another takeaway was having your essays reviewed by trusted friends and teachers. They helped me spot flaws and inconsistencies that I wasn’t aware of, giving me fresh perspectives to refine my narrative. I also made sure my essays and extracurriculars told a cohesive story. Everything tied back to my passion for neuroscience and caregiving.
Again, you guys might be tired of hearing this, but I need to stress that the key is to be authentic and true to   yourself. Your application should reflect who you are, not who you think the admissions officers want you to  be. Trust me, when you’re genuine, your story will shine through. At the end of the day, you’ll end up where  you truly belong. Good luck!
