Rutgers researchers have found that life on Earth predominantly comes in the largest and smallest sizes, with the planet’s biomass concentrated in organisms at either end of the size spectrum. The surprising discovery was made after a five-year study analyzing data on the size and biomass of every type of living organism. The pattern favoring large and small organisms held across all species types and was more pronounced in land-based organisms than in marine environments. The study highlights the importance of microbes and trees as the “silent partners” that recycle nutrients and replenish the air on Earth. Rutgers researchers conduct survey on the body sizes of Earth’s organisms. Life may come in all shapes and sizes, but in nature, the most extreme size ranges predominate, according to Rutgers researchers. A survey of body sizes of Earth organisms, published Wednesday, March 29, in the science journal PLoS ONE, shows that the planet’s biomass – the material that makes up all living organisms – is concentrated in organisms at either end of the size spectrum. “This conclusion – that life on earth comes packaged predominantly in the largest and smallest sizes – was a discovery that surprised us,” said Malin Pinsky, an associate professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Natural Resources in the Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) and an author of the study. “Sometimes it seems like mosquitoes or flies or ants must run the world, and yet, when we did the numbers, we found that our world is dominated by the microbes and the trees. These are the silent partners that recycle the nutrients and replenish the air all around us.” Patterns of Size in Land and Marine Organisms To obtain the results, researchers spent five years compiling and analyzing data about the size and biomass of every type of living organism on the planet – from tiny one-celled organisms such as soil archaea and bacteria to large organisms such as blue whales and sequoia trees. They found that the pattern favoring large and small organisms held across all types of species and was more pronounced in land-based organisms than in marine environments. “The largest body sizes appear across multiple species groups, and their maximum body sizes are all within a relatively narrow range,” said Eden Tekwa, lead author of the study who conducted the research first as a postdoctoral fellow at Rutgers, then at the University of British Columbia. “Trees, grasses, underground fungi, mangroves, corals, fish, and marine mammals all have similar maximum body sizes,” added Tekwa, now a research associate with McGill University’s Department of Biology. “This might suggest that there is a universal upper size limit due to ecological, evolutionary, or biophysical limitations.” Katrina Catalano, another author of the study, conducted research as a doctoral student in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Natural Resources at Rutgers. The researchers said humans belong to the size range that comprises the highest biomass, which is a relatively large body size. The work opens the door to a better understanding of elemental life processes. “Body size is a fundamental feature of life, governing everything from metabolic rates to birth rates and generation times,” Pinsky said. “Cataloging which body sizes are most common is a key step towards understanding the world around us.” Reference: “The sizes of life” by Eden W. Credit: Jeff Liang New findings from research conducted in Moorea reveal that the existence of coral skeletons has a significant impact on the recovery of reefs following bleaching events. Natural disasters can wreak havoc in a region, leading to the abrupt destruction of species that make up an ecosystem. The manner in which this occurs can significantly impact the recovery process. For instance, fires reduce the landscape to ashes, while heatwaves create a legion of wooden remnants. Similarly, storm surges and coral bleaching wreak havoc under the sea. Researchers from UC Santa Barbara delved into how these two types of disturbances could impact coral reefs. They discovered that coral finds it more challenging to recover from bleaching than from storms, even when the mortality rate was comparable in both situations. The skeletal remains from bleaching provide a shield for algae, which outcompete the slow-growing coral. This research, led by doctoral candidate Kai Kopecky, was recently published in the journal Ecology. Most shallow-water corals host symbiotic algae that provide the animals with food in exchange for a safe home and nutrients. But extreme conditions can throw this arrangement out of alignment, causing the coral to expel their partners in a process known as bleaching, which is often fatal. Credit: Jeff Liang Researchers at UC Santa Barbara have studied coral and their reef ecosystems around the island of Moorea, French Polynesia since the late 1980s. Kopecky’s second visit to the island coincided with a major bleaching event. “To see lots of bright white coral skeletons is very jarring,” he said, but he took solace that the island’s reefs have proven remarkably resilient in the past. Unfortunately, a different pattern began to emerge this time. Seaweed, a major competitor with coral for space on the reef, began colonizing the bleached skeletons. Kopecky wondered if the skeletons’ presence was setting the reef on a pathway toward a more algae-dominated state. Previous work at Moorea showed that tropical reefs can host either coral- or seaweed-dominated communities. These distinct states are resilient to small disturbances, but a large shock can flip the ecosystem from one to the other in a process called hysteresis. Once this happens, the reef won’t revert to its previous state even if the conditions do. The system has found a new equilibrium. Mathematical Modeling to Predict Reef Recovery Kopecky developed a mathematical model to compare reef dynamics after a bleaching event — which leaves skeletons in place — and after a storm — which scours the reef bare. He used a system of five differential equations to capture the transition between empty space, live and dead branching coral, and seaweed cover on the reef. The results were telling. “Just the fact that those skeletons are left on the reef results in these fundamentally different patterns of recovery,” Kopecky said. Coral skeletons seem to protect young algae from herbivores that would otherwise keep it in check. The animals can’t get in all the crevices, so the algae gains a foothold from which to spread. This protection doesn’t appear to provide the same benefits to young coral. The authors suspect that coral don’t face as much pressure from predators as algae do. What’s more, algae can quickly outgrow coral when given the chance. “Coral is literally laying down rock, while the algae are mostly just fast-growing, soft, leafy material,” said senior author Holly Moeller, an assistant professor of ecology, evolution and marine biology. Reef buildup is a slow process, with coral death usually balanced by recruitment. New growth incorporates dead skeletons into the larger reef structure. But bleaching kills a lot of coral all at once — especially the oldest and youngest — and the skeletons eventually become brittle through erosion. It’s not a strong foundation for young coral to build their lives upon. The Debate Over Skeleton Removal If dead skeletons hinder coral recovery, why not simply remove them? This approach is gaining support in other ecosystems. “Think of prescribed fires or the thinning of dead trees in forests so that the system is more resilient to future disturbances,” Kopecky said. However, coral skeletons provide many benefits. They form a habitat for sundry kinds of animals and some evidence suggests that the structural complexity of a reef correlates with faster coral recovery. “The effect really depends on what the nature of that structure is,” Kopecky said. Material density, strength, and spatial layout all influence reef dynamics. “Those aspects need to be taken into consideration before you go out and just start jackhammering the reef.” The team has a suite of ongoing experiments in Moorea, including one exploring how the reef recovers when dead coral skeletons are removed. Several others are testing the assumptions Kopecky used to create his model. For example, how much does dead coral actually reduce herbivory? And how do the skeletons affect the growth of living corals? Long-Term Projections Through Modeling “Kai’s study is a classic example of the value of mathematical models in ecology,” Moeller said. Coral can live for hundreds of years, and reef recovery can take decades. “That’s just not an experiment that you can do realistically. “But if you have a model,” she continued, “and you trust the way you set that model up because you’ve done other experiments, then you can make these projections decades into the future.” Reference: “Material legacies can degrade resilience: Structure-retaining disturbances promote regime shifts on coral reefs” by Kai L. Credit: Photo by Sarah Termondt Though noise may change moment by moment for humans, it has a more lasting effect on trees and plants. A new Cal Poly study reveals that human noise pollution affects the diversity of plant life in an ecosystem even after the noise has been removed. This is the first study that explores the long-term effects of noise on plant communities. It was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. In a study conducted twelve years ago near natural gas wells in New Mexico, researchers found that there were 75% fewer piñon pine seedlings in noisy sites as in quiet ones. This was most likely due to the noise driving away the Woodhouse’s scrub jay, which plants thousands of pine seeds while storing them to eat during the winter months. A research team recently returned to the sites to find out whether the piñon pine had recovered over time. Because companies change the sites where they use noisy compressors to help produce natural gas, some of the previously noisy sites had become quiet. In these areas, there were fewer seedlings and saplings compared to sites that didn’t have compressors added to the wellpad to speed up gas extraction. The decrease in saplings results from the time when the site was noisy, but the decrease in seedlings shows that piñon pine seeds still weren’t sprouting once the noise was removed. “The effects of human noise pollution are growing into the structure of these woodland communities,” said biology professor and senior author Clint Francis. “What we’re seeing is that removal of the noise doesn’t necessarily immediately result in a recovery of ecological function.” While it’s possible that the piñon pine has decreased because of a lack of opportunities to produce, it’s more likely that the Woodhouse’s scrub jay hasn’t returned to the formerly noisy area and so isn’t planting seeds. “Some animals, like scrub-jays, have episodic memory,” said Jennifer Phillips, the lead author who worked on the project while a postdoc at Cal Poly and who is now a professor at Texas A&M-San Antonio. “Animals like the scrub-jay that are sensitive to noise learn to avoid particular areas. It may take time for animals to rediscover these previously noisy areas, and we don’t know how long that might take.” Researchers also found differences in juniper seedlings and communities of flowering plants depending on current noise levels and whether noise levels had recently changed because noisy compressors were moved. Sites with greater noise had fewer juniper seedlings and different types of plants than quiet sites. Because of the complexity of ecosystems, the cause of these changes is still unknown. “Our results reveal that plant communities change in lots of ways with noise exposure,” Francis said. “We have a decent understanding of how and why foundational trees like piñon pine are affected by noise from our previous work with jays, but we are also seeing large changes in plant communities through changes in the abundance of shrubs and annual plants. These changes likely reflect impacts of noise on animals that eat plants, such as deer, elk, and various insects, plus the many pollinators that are important for plant reproduction. In essence, our research indicates that the consequences of noise are far-reaching and reverberate throughout the ecosystem through lots of species.” Future studies can offer a more fine-tuned look at how noise is causing these ecosystem changes. Researchers want to know more about which herbivores, seed dispersers, and pollinators avoid or are attracted to noise and how changes in insect and animal behavior combine to affect plant communities. Based on patterns from over a decade of an ecosystem experiencing noise pollution, evidence suggests that plant communities may take a long time to recover from the effects of human noise. Still, co-author and lead botanist Sarah Termondt, a Cal Poly research affiliate, emphasizes the need to understand the full and lasting costs of noise. “Continuing to look at long-term changes in floristic inventories over time will elucidate whether communities do eventually recover after long periods of noise pollution, even once it is removed from the landscape,” she said.
