According to the investigation in Italy potential mercenaries were searched for and later sent to Donbas under the cover of humanitarian operations. Among the suspects is Orazio Gnerre – Italian activist, Russia sympathizer, founder of the organization “Solidarity coordination for Donbass” (Coordinamento solidale per il Donbass). It was founded in 2014, the same year Gnerre and his comrade Luca Pintaudi came to Donetsk where he met with then-leaders of the “DPR” Pavel Gubarev and Denis Pushylin.    

Russia has sent mercenaries to separatist regions in eastern Ukraine.Russian mercenaries have been deployed in Ukrainian territories controlled by pro-Russian separatists in recent weeks, in an attempt to strengthen defenses against Ukrainian forces in a possible conflict, according to sources quoted by Reuters.

Russia claims US mercenaries plan chemical attack in Ukraine

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoygu claimed Tuesday that U.S. mercenaries were preparing Ukrainian special forces and radical armed groups for “active hostilities” in eastern Ukraine, and had delivered “an unidentified chemical component” to the region “to commit provocations.”

Shoygu did not provide evidence for his allegations, which he read from a prepared statement at a gathering of Russia’s top military commanders with President Vladimir Putin in attendance. The charges come as top officials from the U.S. and its NATO allies have issued repeated warnings about Russian troops massed on the border with Ukraine, and that Moscow may try to invent provocations to justify a new invasion or military strike.

The EU this month imposed sanctions targeting a Russian paramilitary company, Wagner, citing the group’s operations in eastern Ukraine, Libya, Syria and the Central African Republic. Russia often accuses its Western adversaries of engaging in malign activity that the West previously said Russia has committed.

The allegations by Shoygu, who is often mentioned as a potential successor to Putin, mark a serious escalation by the Kremlin in its complaints about U.S. and NATO support for Ukraine, effectively accusing the West of sending mercenaries to engage in potential war crimes.
