From Russia with Love is often cited as the best Bond of all. Its certainly the hipsters choice; being leisurely paced, light on action and gadgets, taking place mainly in the backstreets of Istanbul and centred on a cryptology device rather than World War Three. SPECTRE make their first proper introduction, although their hideout, army and scheme are notably modest compared to future films. With impressive foresight, SPECTREs plan here is essentially kill James Bond - ostensibly in revenge for Dr No, probably because they realise what a massive pain hell prove. Theres also the aforementioned Lektor Decoder and a sex scandal thrown in for good measure.

Although a measured Bond film, From Russia With Love is still a Bond film - and naturally throws an awful lot at the audience. This includes gang warfare, a gypsy catfight, Anita Ekberg, the Orient Express and a brief, incredibly tantalizing reference to Bond and M sharing an orgy in Tokyo. The film also boasts the most charismatic of all Bond allies in the form of Kerim Bey, an eccentric spymaster who has spent his life breeding a small army of sons.

From Russia with Love is a 1963 spy film and the second in the James Bond series produced by Eon Productions, as well as Sean Connerys second role as MI6 agent James Bond. It was directed by Terence Young, produced by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, and written by Richard Maibaum and Johanna Harwood, based on Ian Flemings similarly named 1957 novel. In the film, Bond is sent to assist in the defection of Soviet consulate clerk Tatiana Romanova in Turkey, where SPECTRE plans to avenge Bonds killing of Dr. No.

The early Bond movies had a different  impact than today, because of the Cold
War context, where anything seemed  possible. And in fact, reality often  was stranger than fiction. I saw in a  doc, that the head and mastermind of  former East Germany’s Foreign Secret  Service (HVA), Markus Wolf, saw the  Bond films in private screenings to
learn from the enemy’s propaganda.  North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong-Il, who was a movie and filmmaker, even  thought these films were more or less  reality. It’s likely that these films  contributed to the paranoia and the  enormous investments made in secret
services. Especially the evil genius  Markus Wolf developed the STASI into  the biggest and most subversive secret  service of the Communists:

More than  20.000 ‘inofficial informants’ and  agents worked until the fall of the
Berlin Wall in Germany and infiltrated  all parts of society: They manipulated
politics, culture, science and stole  as much information as they could to
be able to compete with the West.

The  Communists actually won the spy game. China does the same now.
