Chinese navy commissions first fourth generation destroyer

The warship named Nanchang was commissioned by Peoples Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) in the port city of Qingdao, official media reported. Launched on June 28, 2017, the Type 055 destroyer is equipped with new air defence, anti-missile, anti-ship and anti-submarine weapons.

北約將中國海軍055型驅逐艦命名為RENHAI class CG，RENHAI顯然是拼音，CG為巡洋艦。西方海軍界一直認為055大驅是巡洋艦級別，而非驅逐艦。不過RENHAI要翻譯成中文有好幾種，分別為「任海級」、「仁海級」、「刃海級」。不過，大多數軍事觀察人士覺得「任海」可能更加適合，這同055型驅逐艦的性能較為切合顯示055大驅可以在任意海域航行作戰.

The Nanchang, Chinas first Type 055 guided-missile destroyer, was commissioned in the Peoples Liberation Army Navy on Sunday morning in the port city of Qingdao, east Chinas Shandong Province.

The 10,000 ton-class destroyer officially debuted at the multinational naval parade in celebration of the Chinese navys 70th founding anniversary on April 23, 2019.

Launched on June 28, 2017, the destroyer was equipped with new air defense, anti-missile, anti-ship and anti-submarine weapons, said a statement from the Navy.

The commission of Nanchang marks the Navys leap from the third generation to the fourth generation of destroyers, according to the statement

The 180-meter long, 20-meter wide Type 055 class is a development of the Type 052D Luyang III-class guided-missile destroyer, but is about a third bigger than the latter. Given its size, the U.S. Department of Defense has classified the Type 055 as cruiser [CG] rather than a destroyer. According to some estimates, the displacement of a Type 055 destroyer appears to be almost a third greater than that of a Flight IIA Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer.

The Type 055’s main armament consists of two cell blocks consisting of a total of 112 vertical launch systems (VLS) capable of firing medium- to long-range surface-to-air [SAM], anti-ship, and land-attack cruise missiles including HHQ-9 surface-to-air missiles, YJ-18 long-range, anti-ship cruise missiles, CJ-10 land-attack cruise missiles [LACS], next to others. The ship is also armed with a H/PJ-38 130mm main gun. Later upgraded variants of the Type 055 destroyer could also be armed with a railgun.

The primary armament are missiles carried in 112 universal vertical launch cells (VLS);^] 64 cells forward and 48 cells aft. The same VLS model is used on the Type 052D destroyer,^[] which is believed to be an implementation of the GJB 5860-2006 sta

The longest variant, with 9-metre cells, is likely used.^[] The Type 055 is expected to carry HHQ-9 surface-to-air missiles, YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missiles, CJ-10 land-attack cruise missiles, and missile-launched anti-submarine torpedoes upon entering service.^[
