| When it comes to tossing out glass drink bottles with tea filter and jars I am just amazed on how many I go through in a months' time. I have been seriously contemplating all of the uses for the little guys such as: Filling them with scented candle wax. Storing craft supplies, buttons, beads, rubber bands, etc. Organizing all of my accumulated nuts, bolts, screws, etc. Hoarding pennies, dimes, and nickels for that rainy day. Saving them for packaging gifts of cookie mix, potpourri, bath salts, etc. Filling them with layers of different colored sands mixed with sea shells. Making homemade snow globes. Starting a bug collection....this will never happen! There are just so many great ideas for recycling bottles and jars, but...they still look like recycled food canisters and jars...not that it matters, but it does to me, I will be the first to admit I like cool, decorative stuff! Those "oooh" and "ahhh" kind of things! So I have decided to decorate my rescued trash and turn these little glass hobnobs into treasured keepsakes which I hope to one day pass down to my children (God bless them and may they have big basements). Don't you just love the hand painted vases and glasses sold in so many of the upscale shops? These same motifs can be easily painted on to thermos food flasks and jars. There are some adorable stencils available along with detailed instructions to get you started painting glass. Just remember decorating glass is a lot of fun if you use the right craft materials. Glass is non- porous material which means you have to use paints and glues that will adhere specifically to their surface. Just check with your craft supplier to make sure you have the right "stuff". If painting is not your "thing" then consider the wonders of gluing! One of the simplest and quite rewarding crafts is decoupage. Glass works well as a base for decoupage projects. I love to work with papers that have a translucent lightness such as rice paper that allows light to pass through the glass and the paper giving a stained glass appearance to the finished craft. The thermos food jar cap and jar lid can also be decoupaged and/or painted to complement the design. For ideas search catalogs and online home decor shops, you will be inspired by all the wonderful treats they have in store for you. My all time favorite craft is "glass on glass" mosaics; nothing can be more visually pleasing than real stained glass. If you have ever had even the slightest desire to try making stained glass, try this craft first. It's an easy introduction into working with glass and the results are gorgeous. A little bit of clear glass adhesive, a few pieces of broken cathedral stained glass cobbles, add a few glass beads and maybe a glass butterfly or other medallion and behold a treasured keepsake! These are just a few ideas that can help you create some nifty bottles and jars for gift giving or just to hold your stuff while giving you a bit of added glitz to your home. Join me and make recycling a part of your daily routine, it just takes a few extra minutes of your time but the benefits to our beautiful earth will be rewarding for all. http://www.wmwaterbottle.com/html/en/Products/Vacuum-Flask/Stainless-steel-drink-bottles.html |
