森林溪水撿垃圾（一）

6/18（週一）一早上班，眾多伊媚兒（email）中有一封是公司發給所有員工的，主旨是「沉溺於塑料中？」，內容大致是⋯⋯

提及海洋，想到的可能是沙灘漫步、海水浩蕩、海中生物，而不是塑料袋、瓶。然而，塑料正以驚人的速度在海洋中積累。有多嚴重？想到一個「島嶼」吧，有一大片比德州面積大兩倍的塑料垃圾，正在太平洋上漂浮，可以肯定的是，它已經失控了。自2016年發現以來，這「太平洋大垃圾場」（Great Pacific Garbage Patch）的塑料量已增加了一倍，目前塑料垃圾已超過87,000噸了。

這僅僅是個開始。據海洋保護協會（Ocean Conservancy）預估，未來十年塑料的消費量將增加一倍。如果人類在未來五十年仍然如此繼續著，你能想像地球會是什麼樣嗎？

我們能夠做些什麼呢🤔？

這是個警訊，但也展露一線曙光。超過11,500名員工承諾減少使用（Reduce）、重複利用（Reuse）、增加回收（Recycle），GEICO正在努力減少塑料廢物。承諾「三R」並不是參與的唯一方式，加入垃圾撿拾隊是減少塑料廢物進入海洋的另一種方式。要了解更多GEICO的綠色計畫及如何盡盡一己之力，請聯繫您所在地區的綠色冠軍(Green Champion)團隊 。

見此伊媚兒，我就想到公司（洛城分部）四週的森林以及流穿森林的小溪，也有一些垃圾吧，當天中午我就到森林裡探尋垃圾了。我偶爾在那森林裡打太極拳，這回刻意去找垃圾，林內溪裡，還真的發現不少垃圾呢。

我就如火如荼地與相關人等接洽聯繫，打電話、發伊媚兒、探訊息、索資源、求支援、拉義工。這片森林有部分是公司的，其餘屬於洛城市政府，小溪是Cabin John Creek（僅一 小段在公司後面），也是歸屬於市政府。隨後，我也領著設施主任Ann走了一圈、實地考察垃圾，綠地森林廣闊，垃圾也不少，煙屁股、酒瓶、可樂罐、塑膠垃圾等，竟然還有老式電視、手提箱、皮包、鏟子、地毯、輪胎⋯⋯等等，真是種類繁多、應有盡有。這小溪源於洛城，長十一哩，彎彎曲曲，穿越蒙郡，最終流入波多馬克河(Potomac River)，之後 流向切薩皮克灣(Chesapeake Bay)，再來流進北大西洋，水水相依相連。

Ann非常支持「森林溪水撿垃圾」的活動，尤其是百餘員工的洛城分部竟然還沒有一位綠色冠軍。她並向我透漏：「幾年前，公司側面的大垃圾箱旁，被人丟棄了一大堆垃圾，還有別人搬家後所遺棄的大型家具等😱，公司因此還被警察開了罰單，並限時要我們將垃圾清理乾淨⋯⋯真是的！所以，現在公司四周裝置了攝影機，24小時攝影偵視。」真是令人無語😓。

Ann提供塑膠袋、手套、驅蟲劑等，公司總部的某一綠色冠軍為我設計了海報，⋯⋯萬事俱備，就缺義工。我就負責以身作則找義工，並發送鼓舞的伊媚兒給分部的所有員工：「⋯⋯這小溪的河，河內的垃圾、塑膠垃圾，流入波多馬克河、大西洋，會影響環境生態、水源水質及水中生物。『森林溪水撿垃圾』讓我們為拯救地球（TO SAVE THE EARTH）盡 上一份綿薄之力。😍希望您也能夠參加我們的隊伍！」

TO是雙關語，也是我們所在地Tower Oaks的簡稱，我抓人、鼓舞人、領導人來跟我一起 撿垃圾，每週五中午活動一次，也創造了一些激勵人心的台詞，例如，「愛心像地球一樣大」（Your heart is as big as the Earth.）、「精神像海洋一樣深邃」（Your spirit is as deep and wide as the ocean.），一股傻勁，招募到八位愛心人士，一 週後（6/29）立即正式活動。

我們謙卑地為拯救地球盡上一份微小的心力😍，死而後已。

Drowning in plastic? 

When you think of the ocean, do you think of plastic? Your thoughts probably wandered to sandy beaches and marine life rather than swells of plastic bags and water bottles. Yet, the oceans are filling with plastic at an alarming rate. Fortunately, with the help of associates like you, GEICO can help reduce plastic waste one recycled container at a time.

How bad is it?

Considering that there is an “island” of mostly plastic trash twice the size of Texas floating around in the Pacific Ocean, it’s safe to say that things have gotten out of hand. The plastic mass, named the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” has doubled in size since its discovery in 2016 and now contains over 87,000 tons of plastic.

This is only the beginning. According to the Ocean Conservancy, plastic production and consumption are predicted to double over the next 10 years. Could you imagine what the earth will be like if we continue this pattern for the next 50 years?

What can I do to help?

It can be alarming, but there’s a bright side. Thanks to more than 11,500 associate pledges to use less and recycle more, GEICO is on its way to reducing its plastic waste. Pledging to use less and recycle isn’t the only way to get involved. Joining a trash pick-up team is another way to reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in the ocean.
