忽略的單曲，經過25年的銷售，這張精選僅在美國一地就賣出兩千五百萬張，

為美國唱片協會（riaa）宣佈為史上最暢銷專輯之一。

老鷹合唱團的巔峰出現在1977年，

新吉他手joe walsh來自硬式搖滾團james gang，他為老鷹合唱團帶來新氣象，

不僅擺脫前期蕭瑟的鄉村風格加強了電吉他的部份，

更是除了henley/frey之外的作曲主力。

這些影響明顯反應在該年老鷹合唱團的鉅作「hotel california」之中。

它一舉拿下專輯榜第一名，

同時也是暢銷百萬的白金專輯，

其中單曲new kid in town、hotel california更是雙雙拿下冠軍，

尤其後者，不僅是葛萊美獎年度最佳單曲，

在台灣只要是做現場演唱的樂團無不表演此曲，

因而被封為pub的聖歌。

由於hotel california普及率之高，自然被視為該團的招牌代表作。

這張專輯的第三首單曲life in the fast lane正是joe walsh的大作，

嘎嘎乍響的電吉他描繪出現代生活腳步的迅速與繁忙。

joe walsh是老鷹合唱團裡最先開始出個人專輯與擁有暢銷單曲的團員。

「hotel california」專輯之後第一任貝斯手randy meisner亦離團追求個人演唱生涯。

1979年專輯「the long run」推出，heartache tonight、the long run是其中暢銷曲，

不過最受樂迷喜愛的歌曲卻首推由新任貝斯手timothy b. schmit

（與前任貝斯meisner同樣來自poco合唱團）

以細膩高音所主唱的抒情曲i can't tell you why。

 年由於長年巡迴表演的疲憊和成名所累積的壓力，

加上團員間音樂上的歧見，

誰也不願意等上個兩三年才發表一張且只收錄十首歌的屬於「老鷹」專輯

（最主要還是所選歌曲幾乎又以henley/frey為主），

於是在1980年底出版的現場專輯之後大夥各奔東西開始著手個人專輯的錄製，

henley、frey、felder、walsh、schmit都各有作品問世，

其中仍以henley和frey最受關切，

frey在單飛後第一首歌the one you love是走紅大街小巷的情歌（尤其是台灣）。

henley以第二張個人專輯中的boys of summer得到1985年度葛萊美獎最佳搖滾男歌手。

 1994年一張由當紅鄉村藝人

向老鷹合唱團致敬的專輯common thread: the songs of the eagles，

讓老鷹團員萌生復出江湖之意，

一張集結四首新歌和經典再現的專輯hell freezes over就此產生。

距離1982年精選「eagles greatest hits vol.2」發表前宣告正式解散，

五人再同台已是12年之後的mtv不插電演唱會了。
