《我宣誓向祖國效忠》(I vow to thee, my country) 是首英國古老民謠
歌詞是來自英國Cecil Spring-Rice爵士在1918年第一次世界大戰結束後
為紀念在英國戰時陣亡的人民
所寫的詩文《Urbs Dei》(The Two Fatherlands)
內容是講述基督徒對國家的效忠對及對天國的渴望

而在1921年
女兒與Cecil Spring-Rice女兒同校的英國作曲家霍斯特
(Gustav Theodore Holst 1874-1934)為它配上音樂
這段音樂也是他1914至1916年創作的《行星組曲》中《木星》之主旋律

原文歌詞如下

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love:
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

在台灣唸書的最後一年
學校曾為畢業生播放歌曲慶祝
記得那天雷雨交加
我有事不克參加晚上的畢業典禮
因而提早離開校園
那時心中正充滿離別的複雜情緒
經過校門前草坪廣場時
正好看到一位工作人員正頂著風雨
為巨大的音響設備做覆蓋
這時傳來的音樂就是這首《木星》
幾年下來
每當我聽到這段音樂
就都不由想起這位在雨中奮戰之士
