On the second day after we arrived in Cádiz, we accepted the invitation from the girl with black lipstick at the café near the Arco de la Rosa to visit her at the studio where she practices Alegrias dance. The next day we went back to the Arco and followed east on Calle Pelota. We held each other so tightly as if we were one person in order to walk side by side on this narrow street. The studio was near Plaza de San Juan de Dios in a house with pilaster-like fluted panels. We could hear clearly in the entrance hall a woman’s voice clamoring: “Sus manos deben moverse como palomas.” We opened the big wooden door and walked on tiptoes, and soon sat down on the floor. The group had started dancing.
