１９７３年１０月２６日，２９歲的美國歌壇天后黛安娜．蘿絲（Diana Ross）與３４歲的’靈魂樂王子’──創作歌手馬文蓋（Marvin Gaye）推出合唱大碟［Diana & Marvin］（Motown發行）　

這張專輯在１９７０年便已計畫，但蓋馬文蓋在合唱夥伴Tammi Terrell去世後處於個人平靜期，

摩城唱片未能將兩人結合在一起，而是專注於羅絲新興的個人事業。

１９７１年摩城再度促成蘿絲與蓋合作．

不過兩人各有工作，因此，摩城決定像他們對蓋和Tammi Terrell所做的那樣——分開錄製。
