１９７０年代末期 處在事業巔峰迪斯可女王唐娜桑瑪（Donna Summer）想擴展不同音樂風格, 卻與所屬的卡薩布蘭加唱片為此爭執不斷──後者希望她繼續維持迪斯可路線 另外她覺得公司也剝削她, 並將她塑造成她不喜歡性感形象 加上公司提前推出桑瑪與芭芭拉史翠珊（Barbra Streisand）合唱的［No More Tears］ 與唐娜獨力譜寫的［Dim All The Lights］的時間衝突 讓後者只升到美國Billboard單曲榜亞軍 與后座失之交臂 讓她十分不悅 在歷經一段心理低潮後 唐娜在基督徒找回信心 １９８０年 桑瑪跟卡薩布蘭加唱片正式分道揚鑣 加入娛樂圈鉅子David Geffen剛成立的Geffen唱片 成為他第一個簽約的歌手
１９８０年 唐娜開始籌備在新東家的首張大碟［The Wanderer／流浪者］ 仍由Giorgio Moroder&Pete Bellotte製作 桑瑪參與五首歌曲創作 當時美國興起抵制迪斯可的活動 他們決定放棄這種桑瑪藉以成名的曲風 改以搖滾主導, 並加入鄉村搖滾（Rockabilly）, 新浪潮跟福音樂風 只是當時卡薩布蘭加唱片打算推出唐娜另一張選輯［Walk Away］ Geffen要求儘快出產成品 導致專輯製作過程倉促 不過１０月推出後 卻廣受好評 被認為是３２歲的桑瑪事業最佳大碟之一 在商業方面, 登上美國專輯榜＃１３ 雖然沒以前大碟高 但也拿到金唱片（５０萬張＋） 歐洲表現則差強人意
同名歌曲是首波主打 由唐娜＆Giorgio Moroder譜寫 被製作成一首融合新浪潮與Dance-Rock的流行曲 在曳步般的急速節拍中 桑瑪以較為收斂輕盈的唱腔詮釋 與她過去奔放的迪斯可曲風迥異 ［The Wanderer］登上美國Billboard單曲榜＃３ 銷售逾百萬 拿到金唱片 是唐娜１９８０年代在美國銷售最高單曲 另外副榜──靈魂榜＃１３ 並以整張專輯型式打進舞曲榜＃８ 國際市場：加拿大／西班牙＃４ 紐西蘭＃５ 澳洲＃６ 瑞典＃９ 荷蘭＃３０ 英國＃４８ ［The Wanderer］讓桑瑪成功在音樂上轉型, 成為她的名曲之一
