Ruth(路得)為〈舊約聖經・路得記〉中之人物,其身為摩押女子,於夫亡後不願離棄婆婆拿俄米,誓言「你的國就是我的國,你的神就是我的神」,遂隨婆歸返伯利恆,寄身異鄉,甘心貧困,以拾麥為生,後為波阿斯(Boaz)所娶,成為大衛王之曾祖母。濟慈於此引用 Ruth,寓意「思鄉而淚立異地」之幽微情境,亦以其溫婉堅貞之身影,對映夜鶯之歌所觸動之人心。詩中言「She stood in tears amid the alien corn(她站在異鄉麥田中淚下)」,描繪其漂泊無依而內心纏綿之悲,實為詩篇中最動人之隱喻之一。
