這是一篇關心台灣土石流議題的外國朋友寫給政府並轉寄給我看的信

信中提到一種根部很深的草,可以有效預防土石流。

In 2007 my fourth book was published in Taiwan. A short reader for English learners, it is a story of an Indian village destroyed by mudslides and flooding.

My research for the book led me to a remarkable discovery that should be brought to your attention.

Vetiver (known in China as Xiang-Geng-chao) is a grass native to India but now cultivated all over the tropical world.

Why? It can prevent or minimize soil erosion, mudslides and general flooding.

How? Note the following from an online description of Veitiver:

Unlike most grasses, Vetiver does not form a horizontal mat of roots; rather, the

roots grow almost exclusively downward, 2–4 meters. This makes vetiver an

excellent stabilizing hedge for stream banks, terraces, and rice paddies. The close

growing stems also help to block the runoff of surface water. Vetiver

is noninvasive and can easily be controlled by cultivation of the soil at the

          boundary of the hedge.

According to The Vetiver Network International, a system of planting the grass has been successfully used for soil erosion control, slope protection, and disaster mitigation.

Of particular importance to Taiwan is slope protection and disaster mitigation. Note the following from the VNI website:

Slope Protection: The combination of deep roots with tensile strength of 75 MPa

that improve the shear strength of soil by as much as 40% makes Vetiver grass an

ideal plant for stabilizing steep and unstable slopes. The Vetiver System when

applied to such slopes significantly reduces the probability of land slippage and

reduces the need for “hard solutions”. Applications include highway, railway,

riverbanks, public utility right of ways, canal, dikes, and levee slopes.

The Vetiver Network International, based in Thailand, has a website which can be accessed for further information at: http://www.vetiver.org/

I can also be reached by email for further information at g7429@ms38.hinet.net.

Thank you for allowing me to add this treasure to your current research.

Sincerely,

Guy M. Redmer

如果沒有特別的台灣原生種生態考量,似乎可以考慮再容易有土石流的地方種植這種草類。
