| 1. Movie Review on "Oliver Twist" 2011/06/18 17:15
As most of the people know, Roman Polanski is a director famous for his works The Tenant and The Pianist, which really made him a big achievement. But Polanski has said that he set out to make a film for his own children before. So this time, he turned to Dickens’ classic tale Oliver Twist for his latest film project. Oliver is an orphan who lives in the workhouse. Start from the beginning, he was trade by Mr. Bumble to a local undertaker because of making an Unintentional mistake. He didn’t get well treated there, so he ran away toward London. In London, Oliver met lots of people that really affected his life hardly. Fagin, who gave Oliver shelter, is a career criminal who trains orphan boys to pick pockets for him. Mr. Brownlow, the man whose handkerchief was stolen, and took care of Oliver after the stealing. As the saying goes, “life will find its way out.” Oliver finally overcome all the difficulties and live a better life at the end of the story. This film shows Oliver's many different adventures from working in a workhouse to becoming a pickpocket and end up with happy ending of course. Oliver Twist has good direction, good performances, good original music, good film editing and so on. I think Polanski successfully adapts the story to the big screen and does a very good job of it though some characters are cut from the book, and some elements are missing, but that is expected when a book is translated into a film. Despite of those cuts, the movie is still very truthful to the book, and also very worth seeing. 2. Movie Review on Pride and Prejudice Adapting from Jane Austen’s classic novel, Pride and Prejudice is now back to silver screen again. Austen has been dead for 189 years, but her work is apparently hotter than ever. This film is the third adaptation of her Pride and Prejudice in as many years, and the 10th overall. Although the plot and characters are so familiar that it's a real trick to put it on screen in an original way, cast and crew find new life in it. This time, in the latest version, we have a star-spangled cast. For heroine Elizabeth Bennet, played by Keira Knightley ("Pirates of the Caribbean"), and for hero Mr. Darcy, was acted by Matthew Macfadyen ("MI-5"). Though many people prefer 1995’s version broadcasted on BBC which was act by Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, it’s still a worth watching film for those who never dabble in Austen’s classics. The whole story takes place in 18th century England, Victorian Age. Mr. Bennet is an English gentleman living in Hertfordshire with his overbearing wife and five blossoming daughters. In this society, women have only one route to self-improvement: to marry advantageously. The story centers around the relationship between the middle-class Elizabeth (Knightley), who needs to make a suitable marriage, not only for her own well-being, but to assure that her sisters and her mother don't end up destitute and the wealthy aristocrat Mr. Darcy. To most of her family’s amazement, and our delight, they are at last united. The film Pride & Prejudice contains the major plot points of Jane Austen's novel, and all of the book's important characters are in the movie, although some of them only briefly. Also, it’s a little pity that the movie emphasizes the personal relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy at the expense of developing a detailed portrait of the society in which they live. Thanks to the supporting cast and the strength of the original material, Pride & Prejudice is a mildly enjoyable entertainment, particularly for fans of the novel. Though there was no reason to make this film, that might be reason enough to see it. Pride & Prejudice has stood the test of time, and it seems there is no end to the remakes and adaptations appearing on our screens I guess that's why the classics are classics, it doesn't matter how you dress them up, they will always appeal. |
