| 3:00 AM — The Little House of God
At three in the morning, he was walking with no coat, a suitcase in his left hand, and a Bible in his throat. He had been a faithful boy, learned the prayers, learned every line, tried to love the way they told him, tried to leave himself behind. Then he fell in love with a boy. Just a boy with gentle eyes. And suddenly his whole religion felt too heavy to survive. His parents called it sickness. They said, “We'll make you well.” They drove him to a hospital where nobody knew his name. The doors closed behind him. The hallway turned to white. He whispered, “God, if You are there, please don't leave me here tonight.” Then the lights went out. Three o'clock. No nurses. No voices. No footsteps in the hall. Just one little golden window shining at the end of the wall. He opened a door that had never been there before. Outside was a tiny house, with a crooked wooden sign: GOD'S LITTLE HOUSE SU-GE & LA-DI He stood there crying. A man opened the door. No halo. No thunder. No angels in the sky. Just Su-Ge holding a kettle, and La-Di rubbing sleepy eyes. “Come in,” Su-Ge said. “I don't have any money.” La-Di shrugged. “Good. Then you don't have to pay.” “I think there's something wrong with me.” Su-Ge looked at him quietly. “Are you hungry?” He started crying harder. “No.” “Cold?” “Yes.” “Then that's what's wrong tonight.” They gave him a blanket. They made him tea. Nobody asked him to change. Nobody asked him to explain why his heart had chosen a man. At three fifteen in the morning, he finally whispered, “Does God hate me?” La-Di looked toward the window. “I don't know everything about God.” Then he smiled. “But I don't think love needs permission to be love.” Outside, the night kept turning. And somewhere far away, his parents were still praying for the son they thought they had lost. But inside that little house, he slept for the first time without being afraid of himself. By sunrise, the house was gone. Only the sign remained. And underneath the name someone had written: IF YOU HAVE NOWHERE TO GO, COME HOME. He carried that sentence for the rest of his life. People later said the house was a miracle. Some said it was a dream. Some said it was God. Su-Ge and La-Di, when someone asked them years later, only looked at each other. La-Di said, “Maybe he just needed a room.” Su-Ge nodded. “Yeah.” And that was all they ever said. Because sometimes, at three in the morning, the greatest miracle is not that God comes down from heaven. It is that someone opens the door. |
