French trumpeter Eric Truffaz is one of the most inventive and experimental musicians in the European jazz scene. His work explores changing genres and styles like rock, drum and bass and jazz in its most acid form. His most recent album "The Walk of the Giant Turtle" contains the collaboration of musicians Marcelo Giuliani (bass), Marc Erbetta (drums), and Patrick Muller (Fender Rhodes electric piano).

Throughout the album, changes of rhythm, tempo and atmosphere, occur on the 10 tracks without ever sounding repetitive or irregular. The album opens with "Scody" Part I and II. The introspective and smooth ambient sound, slowly increases in the first part of the theme, until Part II, where the rhythm becomes clearer.

It gives the beat a slight sense of jazz funk. The sound explosion comes in the theme "King B," where the bass gets caught and tangled around by the delicate sound of the trumpet, which sounds like a siren. A set of smashing drums and repetitive Rhodes piano, complete this instrumental rock-oriented piece. "Flamingos" is a retrospective and subtle ballad, created by a smooth trumpet and the echo of the Rhodes resembling melancholy.

The jazz-rock vein continues with "Next Door," where the keyboard and the trumpet are the ideal background instruments for the hammering Rhodes and a bass that creates a pulse of noisiness. The last track begins with an intro, which slowly builds with the increasing incorporation of an acoustic piano and a soulful trumpet that smoothly blends together to reach an impact.

In this album, Truffaz remembers his taste of melody and gives importance to a collective instrumental sound rather than to the traditional solo form of jazz. This album is a brilliant work made with a solid production and retrospective music. It will be attractive for those who like this genre and for those who have not had the opportunity to enjoy it
