Night is Elie Wiesel’s masterpiece, a candid, horrific, and deeply poignant autobiographical account of his survival as a teenager in the Nazi death camps. It is hard to underestimate the importance of Night or Wiesel’s lifelong, passionate dedication to ensuring that the world never forgets man’s capacity for inhumanity to man.  It is fitting that we read and discuss this book in the year Wiesel passed away.

Summary:

Despite warnings about German intentions towards Jews, Eliezer’s family and the other Jews in the small Transylvanian town of Sighet (now in modern-day Romania) fail to flee the country when they have a chance. As a result, the entire Jewish population is sent to concentration camps. There, in a camp called Auschwitz, Eliezer is separated from his mother and younger sister, but remains with his father.

As Eliezer struggles to survive against starvation and abuse, he also grapples with the destruction of his faith in God’s justice and battles with the darker sides of himself. Forced into a desperate situation, Eliezer feels a conflict between supporting his ever weakening father and giving himself the best chance of survival.

Over the course of the book, Eliezer and his father are sent from Auschwitz to a new concentration camp called Buna and then, as the Allies (the British and American troops) approach, deeper into Germany, to Buchenwald. A few months before the concentration camps are liberated by Allied soldiers, Eliezer’s father dies. Though Eliezer survives the concentration camps, he leaves behind his own innocence and is haunted by the death and violence he has witnessed.

Discussion Questions:

1.    Why does suffering so often lead to a loss of faith? Why does suffering sometimes lead to an increase in faith?

(1)p. 5: “Moishe the Beadle would help me enter eternity, into that time when question and answer would become ONE.”

(2) p.68” I no longer pleaded for anything. My eyes had opened and I was alone, terribly alone in a world without God, without man. I felt like an observer, a stranger.”
(3)p 115” From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplatin me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me”
(4)P.115” That’s all we thought about. No thought of revenge, or of parents, Only of bread.
(5)p.112”No prayers were said over his tomb. No candle lit in his memory. His last word had been my name. He had called out to me and I had not answered….I didn’t weep, and it pained me that I could not weep. But I was out of tears. And deep inside me.. I might have found something like: free at last!”
Trinity father son holy spirit. Three become one. Once your soul goes with your mind is lucky thing. While laugh , we cry, while cry we laugh. Free from your feeling, to believe what we see is lucky. While others run for life during Titanic start sinking, mother read the bible and accompany kids to go sleep. That’s faith. When the suffering become the sword or the fire to make us be the phoenix, depends on our will.
Faith is to believe what we can change and what we can’t change. Breath in the revenge and fearbreath out the freedom. Enjoy the moment to be your holly self.

2.    Is it worse to die or to be separated from your family? Does Elie Wiesel make a distinction between the two? Does he argue that one is worse than the other?

(1)p.110 “Not even your father. In this place, there is no such thing as father, brother, friend. Each of us lives and dies alone. Let me give you good advice; stop giving your ration of bread and soup to your old father. You can’t help him anymore.”

Emma’s point of view:

They use up their lives to save others. Just like Jesus.

3.    Because our memories are not always reliable, can we consider this book to be "true" and "factual"? Is it possible to think about this book as "truth" without always being 100% accurate? Why or why not?

(1)            P. 6 “Moishe the Beadle , been able to escape, by a miracle. He was wounded in the leg and left for dead.”

(2)            p 7” I wanted to come back to warn you. Only no one is listening to me

p.5”Mas asks and God replies. But we don’t understand His replies. We cant understand them . Because they dwell in the depth of our souls and remain there until we die. The only answers will find only within yourself.”

(3)Emma’s point of view:

Moishe the Beadle just like Jesus. No one believe him and lost the last three days to run for life

If you don’t believe this is true. Just like no one believe Moishe the Beadle

4.    One of Elie Wiesel’s fears was that the world has not learned anything after the Holocaust. Do you think that’s true? Are other people in the world experiencing "Night" or could they?

(1)            Preface x.v.” To forget would be not only dangerous but offensive; to forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.

(2)            Preface x.v “When we speak of this era of evil and darkness, so close and yet so distant, “responsibility” is the key word. The witness has forced himself to testify. For the youth of today, for the children who will be born tomorrow. He does not want his past to become their future.”

(3)            P.118” I have tried to fight those who would forget. Because if we forget, we are guily , we are accomplices.
(4)             p.120” Our lives no longer belong to us alone; they belong to all those who need us desperately.”
(5)            p.120”Action is the only remedy to indifference, the most insidious danger of all.
(6)            Emma’s point of view:
Nowadays, Berlin always vote Gay as their mayor. Their mind change faster than all the other country. We are so stupid so we need to be brave. He who is slow to anger has great understanding. We are alone, not because we are only one, but just can’t speak for ourselves in front of others. The darkest sky could see the brightest star. God gives us enough light to lighten our road. Even after 70 years. From deepest self reflection , German makes him shine again. But now, why Tramp makes American so frighten, cos he reminds us of Hitler. Clever Jews take away all the best from Europe, they are not only the enemy of German but all Europe. Jews believe they are the Best Chosen of God. Once you believe you are the best and only chosen from God, chaos starts
The first emperor of China did nothing good but unite languages and messurement, if Alexander do, then , today, maybe Hitler and Jews are really good brothers.

(3) p.120” Our lives no longer belong to us alone; they belong to all those who need us desperately.”
(4)p.120”Action is the only remedy to indifference, the most insidious danger of all.
