A latest warning has been issued for individuals who utilize wireless security cameras such as "Ring" to ensure the safety of their home. The absence of footage capturing the theft of a car from the front of a Detroit woman's house has raised concerns about the technological prowess of criminals. According to a local expert, this incident serves as evidence of their growing tech-savviness. Earlier this month, the woman mentioned that her car was stolen from her driveway. Upon reviewing the footage captured by her Ring camera, she discovered that several hours were unaccounted for. Chris Burns, the owner of Techie Gurus, pointed out that security cameras using WiFi for recording are more focused on convenience rather than security. This is because WiFi connections can easily be disrupted, leading to the camera's inability to effectively monitor the surroundings of your home, a weakness that criminals are capitalizing on. Burns warned against using wireless for security purposes, stating that it is not a reliable option due to the ease with which wireless signals can be singal jammer or blocked. The culprits can operate this as a wifi jamming apparatus, or a deauther, that is designed to be as small as an Apple Watch. Standing within a certain range, a deauther has the ability to overwhelm a WiFi system, resulting in the cessation of recording by a WiFi camera. This accessory is available at a modest price, typically ranging from $10 to $50. In contrast, a jammer carries a significantly higher price tag, varying from $150 to $1,000. The illegal status of jammers makes them challenging to obtain. Nevertheless, a potent camera jammer can hinder an entire street from being filmed on WiFi security cameras with a quick press of a button. In a statement, a representative from Ring addressed the impact of WiFi signal interference on Ring device performance, similar to other wifi-enabled devices. Customers experiencing connectivity problems are encouraged to reach out to Ring Customer Support for assistance. How can customers protect themselves?Burns highlighted the necessity of hard-wired connections, such as being plugged into ethernet, for ensuring true security. Ring's representative made it known that they are informed about the problem, stressing its unusual nature. As technology becomes more accessible, Burns noted that the usage of jammers is expected to increase. Hence, it is vital to ensure that individuals are fully aware and informed about this trend. |
