Glenn Frey‘s lingering stomach problems have nixed a ceremony where the Eagles were set to be honored at the Kennedy Center. Instead, Frey is now facing major surgery.
The Eagles, in a statement, said Frey “has had a recurrence of previous intestinal issues, which will require major surgery and a lengthy recovery period.”
Fans will remember that Frey had a portion of his intestine removed in 1990, and was later forced off the road during the Eagles’ celebrated Hell Freezes Over reunion tour in 1994 by a bout of diverticulitis. He’s said that these issues, which date back at least to the ’80s, were the result of the band’s raucous lifestyle early on.
The Eagles were set to be recognized for a lifetime of work in the arts during the Kennedy Center Honors on Dec. 6. That portion of the ceremony has now been put off until 2016. Their statement noted that “all four Eagles – Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmidt – can attend” next year.
Meanwhile, a group including singer-songwriter Carole King, actress and singer Rita Moreno, filmmaker George Lucas and others will be recognized as planned this December. The gala event will be broadcast on Dec. 29 via CBS.
“We send our best wishes to Glenn for a swift and full recovery,” Kennedy Center president Deborah Rutter said in a statement. “It felt only right to defer bestowing this extraordinary honor to the group when Glenn could also be in attendance.”
