Well said, ALam.
the same British political system has been in use for well over a century when Thatcher came to the scene. it's the same system which elected successive Labour Govts culminating in "Sick Man of Europe". in China, we also have the same system running for 60+ years now which 1st produced political turmoils like the Great Leap Forward, anti-rightist, & cultural revolution, before Uncle Deng re-emerged at about the same time as Thatcher & surpassing the latter in bringing about what many western economists called a miracle.
the lesson learned in both Britain & China is that system is secondary to the apppearance or the absence of the visionary helmsman.

Pretty good article concerning Thatcher. Deepen my respect for her accomplishment in a very tough politcal environment at her time.
Wish you all get a better leader in Hong Kong next time.
Well written article Wai Lun! In my view Thatcher has single-mindedly transformed Britain into a modern free market economy, not dominated by trade union movement (like France does today). Thank goodness her ceremonial funeral was not interrupted by protestors! She deserved to be remembered properly. However if you had directly been on the receiving end you might have felt hard done by. Perhaps some people in HK might feel that they have been betrayed too when HK was rescinded back to China?? One thing most people don't agree with her view was that there is no such thing as society!! DavidLiu
do not understand what the article is trying to bring out, a strong right wing conservative leader or supporting a left wing union and people power base leader? or supporting anyone that is against the central beijing government
talk is cheap, a leader that deliver peace, stability, prosperity, intergrity, human right and dignaty to the people is good leader
A well written article of William, a lot of insight. Margaret Thatcher's great success was to reduce the power of the unions, which could bring a country to its knees. This had been the case in Australia before John Howard came to power in 1996. Australia in the 1980s experienced all-too-frequent strikes with reduced productivity. Union reform and reducing state welfare are ways to bring Europe out of the financial crisis. Nevertheless, Thatcher's extreme right wing (she labelled Nelson Mandela a terrorist) brought on a biased worldview, she supported corrupt right wing governments which treated their countrymen as hard as any communist governments.
