According to Greg Toppo and Paul Overberg of USA Today , the USA is experiencing a "2^ND great wave" of immigration. The 1^ST which stretched from 1880s to 1920s coincided with the opening of Ellis Island and the social and political transformation of the nation. This time around (adverb phrase), immigrants are more likely to be middle-class and can assimilate more quickly.

A USA Today analysis of a projection predicts that in 2060 there will be a 1-in-3 chance that the next person you see will share your ethnicity. Demographer william Frey adds to this notion when he states that in about 10 years the USA's white population will have begun to shrink in number.
