英語說文解字：Addict and Addiction

   上癮似乎是新興的文明病，英語中也有許相關的詞彙與語法。上癮的動詞

為addict，表示對某物上癮可用get/become + addicted to，例如：

1. Sally seems to get addicted to the Internet because she spends almost eight

         hours a day surfing the Net.

    2.  Drinking five cups of coffee a day, I worry I may get addicted to caffeine.

 註：caffeine (n.) 咖啡因

而“addict”亦可作名詞，意為上癮者，且有兩點值得注意，首先在發音

上，“addict”中的“a”由動詞時的/ə/改發長母音/æ/，而重音位置也由動詞時的“ddi”前移至第一音節“a”，以紅色標記重音位置的變化：

      addict → addict

其二，常有使用者誤以為“addict”的名詞另有其字，自創出“addictor”或“addicter”，使用上可多加注意。

   至於上癮的症狀則可用另一名詞“addiction”表示；若要形容事物易誘發上癮，可用形容詞“addictive”表示，例如：

1. He went to the doctor to treat his nicotine addiction.

    2. A growing number of teenagers are seeking help from psychiatrists to fight

        against their Internet addiction.

    3. Some substance in beverages can be highly addictive, such as alcohol and c

        affeine.
