英語字母中的母音(1)

    讀者應該有印象，以前學到英語母音(vowel)的判讀時，老師或文法書

常以「母音就是a、e、i、o、u共五個」簡單帶過。這樣的說法，雖然簡單

好記，但是並非完全正確。事實上，這五個字母中的四個，a、e、i、o

無論在何種情況都是作為母音，如：

    There is an“i”and an“e”in the name Keith.

當中的i和e都是母音所以冠詞用“an”而非“a”。當成為字彙的第一個

字母，此四個字母也一律以母音發音，如： “average”、

“everlasting”、“intelligent”、“orchestra”。

    A.   An average of five concerts are held in the community center every month.

    B.   The young musician was invited to rehearse with an orchestra.

註：average (n.) 平均數；rehearse (v.) 排練

但是字母“u”的判讀就較為複雜。簡言之，可分為兩種情況：

1. 字母“u”的發音如與其字母本身相同，視為子音(consonant)，如：

A. The word unique begins with a “u.”

B. Walk up the street for three blocks and you will find a

university across from the post office.

此時的“u”讀音為[ju]，所以其實是子音[j]開頭喔。同

理，“union”與“U.S.”都是子音開頭的字詞，所以要說：

    A.   He joined a union to fight for better benefits.

    B.   A U.S. citizen was arrested for breaking the Taiwanese law.

註：union (n.) 公會；citizen (n.) 公民

2. “u”如是其他的發音，如是字彙的第一個字母，發[ʌ]時，就是當

  母音使用，如：

    A.   The book is an ultimate guide to French cuisine.

    B.   It is such an unbelievable personal experience!

註：ultimate (adj.) 終極的；cuisine (n.) 料理

*而在少數情況下，“u”的發音為[ə]也是母音，如在“us”中不強調“u”時。

    此外，除了前述的四個字母外，英語中也有其他字母可當母音使用，
